I'm considering getting an e-bike to hunting. I've seen them on hitch mounted bike carriers. Just curious if others have some experience with this or tips or things to avoid. I'm assuming an e-bike is a bit heavy and the ones I've seen are on carriers that the bike's tires rest on, versus arms that hold it up by the upper tube (and it hangs).

    Thanks.

I've got a love/hate relationship with your question.

Yes, the hitch would carry the E bike with no issue.

No, I do not like the idea of using an E bike to scout/locate hunting locations.

It just seems to me using more primitive methods of transportation is more traditional.

I have nothing against E Bikes.

It just annoys me when I spent 1.5 hours pedal biking to a remote section of trout stream to find a cat already fishing that swung in on a bike that he didn't have to pedal.

Obviously, if one is handy cap, then my response is not pertanant.

Please, these are just my opinion, so do not think I'm being snarky.

I'm looking forward to others responses.

koditten, your comments and feelings about e-bikes are not lost on me. Found a few e-bike tracks this past hunting season. I wasn't perturbed by it necessarily, probably a little jealous, but initially I thought, they should hike in. But that's also just my opinion, i.e., smaller footprint. However, after thinking about it, the footprint is the same as a pedal bike. And fwiw, I primarily bow hunt. So using it to get back into the first few miles, then hiking the another mile or so, I don't see an issue with, as far as any ethical or moral questions. We could go down a rabbit hole on that issue. If it's all about decreasing tech for hunting, then everyone should be using a trad bow or spear. Forget optics, forget long range shooting, binos or range finders, forget compound bows, and jeez, forget fancy hunting clothes and scent blocker. You could take it farther and say it's even unethical to use a vehicle to drive hours to your hunt camp. Why not hunt in the nearest BLM to your own home and walk there? It's a slippery slope argument to say that using an e-bike is unethical due to tech advantages and yet, I'm still torn. I suppose it's the newest tech, and each time something like this reaches hunting, you ask, "how far is technology going to go in such a primitive activity such as hunting?" At some point, hunting loses its luster. Is it hunting anymore if tech makes it so easy that a beginner can harvest a trophy?

Just thinking out loud but I understand where you're coming from.

Any rack rated for the weight will carry whatever you put on it.

    FYI...

There are Bicycles. Yep, they're just called bikes and we know what they are. (Not analog bike or acoustic bike or any other name... Just a bike)

A bike with a motor (electric or gas) and still has pedals is called a Moped. This name has been around for a long time and distinguishes itself by having dual power from a motor and/or pedals. "MO-torized PED-al bike.

A bike with a motor( electric or gas) and only has pegs is called a Motorcycle.

An electric motor on a bicycle with pedals is still just called a MOPED.

A scooter is a 2 wheel "feet on the floor" (no foot shifting/ braking) toy. One with a motor, is called a Vespa. Lol

"E-bikes" is just a stupid redefining marketing term for the idiots who don't want to call their electric Moped a Moped but the reality is it's still just a F'n Moped.

If motorized vehicles are prohibited where you are hunting, then you cannot ride your electric moped there either....

What type of E bike are you referring to? I had a Talaria Sting which I loved. I hauled it using a hitch hauler.

    Those are sick.
But careful, you will confuse the public with the grossly over cooked term "e-bike".

I'd call the Talaria Sting a wicked cool "dirt bike" but not an E-bike just because the power source is battery vs gas

We never called them "petroleum bikes" lol

    Technically you have a...
"Electric powered off-road motorcycle" or as that has always been referred to as a "Dirt bike"

And your rack is the best way to haul them too!

I agree completely. Calling it an ebike is misleading. And they aren't street legal but I passed 3 different cops and they never paid me any attention. Riding it on trails was a lot more fun than pavement though. I traded it for a Honda CRF125 Big Wheel and I plan on getting another Talaria eventually.
