After doing some towing with the passenger side window down, I realize how crummy the exhaust sounds under acceleration. Very raw and stuffy.

I'm considering a change from the cat back and wondering how many people have replaced their system and what did you use? I don't really want more noise, especially in the cab, just want to get rid of the stuffy sound.

I do my best to support local businesses but the BAMUFFLER really is hard to beat! Sound, power, ease of install, quality, and Customer Service!! Looks good too but who’s gonna see it?

I second Dirty Deeds Bamuffler. I met Keith in person and he's a great guy. I have the standard budget system and I dumped it just after the rear axle. I get compliments on the sound of my exhaust. Can't go wrong with Bamuffler.

I just installed this stainless Gibson cat-back exhaust in my First Gen. Like you, I didn't want to the system to be too loud and I think the Gibson is just right in that regard. Unless you go OEM or similar, you will get more noise in the cab but so far I don't find it unpleasant.

JBA shorties and OEM from there... it sounds just right to me.

I would consider a system from BAMuffler, but I'm afraid it would be too loud.

On the 4.7L, you want that stock piping. Any change in diameter will hurt your low end. I really enjoyed my 22 inch magnaflow on my 2005, no drone at all, just enough volume to not sound like it’s plugged up

What @Hbjeff said is correct as usual.

Find a muffler that you like, go to an exhaust shop and have them cut out that giant muffler and install the one you'd like in its place. There is nothing restrictive about the stock tailpipe and it is sized very well.

You should have a resonator ahead of the muffler, it looks like a small flowmaster. You can leave that on, it doesn't affect performance. If you take it off your truck will sound more aggressive but also will have better chance of drone.

Now... you 5.7 guys have to keep in mind we don't have the same options. TRD duals are extinct to us. The BAMuffler is an option but far more expensive than swapping the muffler out, unless he still sells just the muffler.

Thanks Luis. I should have added too here was my muffler trials on my 2005

    1. OE resonator no muffler stock full pipe: sounded mean as heck, loud but not obnoxious at all, surprisingly low amount of drone and excellent power
    2. 22 inch magnaflow with stock pipe, loved it, silent on highway
    3. Same 22 inch magnaflow dumped after the muffler, this was my favorite, it gave just a hair more grumble in the cab
    4. Ba 10 inch muffler with 2.5 inch pipe. Loud, great sound, but definite loss of low end power

Great info...let me ask a couple questions:

What's the difference between 2 and 3? I'm assuming with 2 you replaced the large muffler with the Magnaflow. Not sure what 3 means.

With 4, the BA system replaces the resonator and muffler?

I'm guessing keeping the resonator is key to maintaining the low end. Can I assume that replacing the portion after the resonator with 2.5" pipe and a Magnaflow will maintain torque?

the pipe diameter is your low end. Its a unique size like 2 3/8ths or something. If you increase the pipe size, exhaust gas velocity slows down. The resonator is basically straight through, has no affect on performance either way IMO

Difference between 2 and 3 was the tailpipe. 3 just had a turndown after the muffler.

my BA system was a custom build, back before he had his current designs.

OEM. Here is one I scored that had been in storage since new in 2006. I painted it with BBQ Ceramic.

Its quiet, properly sized, quiet, fits properly, quiet and did I mention quiet. You can check my build page for pics of the old gnarly one. There are pics of the proper Toyota gaskets and clamp part #s, as well.

I have a spare OEM exhaust for my 2002, I bought the spare as a new take-off system in 2004... it's still in storage for if / when I ever need it.

Nice. I scored this for $150. Guy said he bought the truck and the PO had this in storage since new when he put on straight pipes.

My old one had a hole in the side which I patched. Had a few other thin spots developing. Saw this and snatched it. The old one was sounding ratty as the innards were probably toasted.

I had TRD headers on my V6 T100 for extra towing power, and I have JBA short tube headers on my 2002 because the OEM manifolds cracked. Both trucks retained their factory exhaust, and both made a little more power without losing any low end torque. I know that a free flowing muffler on an exhaust that is designed properly would free up an additional 8 to 10 hp, but it's not worth the expense and effort on my 2002. Different story on my 2007 where I am running OEM manifolds and a custom BAMuffer system, the use of a "Y" and correct diameter pipe makes a big difference across the rpm range of the engine.

    IMG_7650 (2).jpg

I expect 1st gen V8 trucks would respond well to a dual muffler, Y pipe, single stock tail pipe cat back - but it's not as easy to produce these for 1st gen trucks as it is for 2nd gen trucks because more plumbing is involved on the 1st gen truck if you want it done right - this makes them expensive.

The y pipe is further upstream on the 4.7 than a 5.7 I believe?

The 5.7 doesn't have a factory Y pipe, it uses a disjointed Y pipe inside the muffler. 1st gen v8 do have what can be considered a Y pipe way upstream on the mid-pipes... I understand that the Y pipe design works in front or behind the muffler(s), so a free flowing muffler that replaces just the factory muffler on a 1st gen might be the ticket.

This looks like a nice upgrade for '00 to '02 trucks.

Correct the “Y” on a 5.7 is the muffler itself

    2 3/8" equals 60mm. Now if I can find a shop with 60mm pipe...
