Has anyone ever had to replace their catalytic converter? If so, did you go OEM or aftermarket? I’m not currently having issues with mine but there’s a chance that it may be clogged. I lost some mpg and performance has degraded some. If I were to replace the exhaust system with OEM parts, how much would that run? I’m assuming a few thousand dollars maybe 3k

That is a very expensive assumption. Might as well cut out the cat yourself and tell insurance you got robbed. Weld it back on while you wait X amount of months to get an OEM replacement.

Tundras do not like aftermarket catalytic converters. Plenty of threads on it already.

Never had a cat code but I smell gas from the tailpipe when I start the truck. Maybe unburned fuel? Weirdest part was when the fuel economy slowly dropped from over 14 mpg and now it’s sitting at 12.1 according to computer in the truck. Acceleration not as good as it used to be, literally requires a little more effort although some days it runs well.

I’m starting to think that my cats are clogged and kinda scared to call the dealer and ask for a quote for a new exhaust system. If I need a replacement I would go with OEM ($$$$$)

Bruh, the cat need to warm up for it to work, I smell un burn gas every morning when I startup on my 19…lol
Also factory program the truck to dump hella fuel when startup to help the cat warm up faster. It’s normal to smell gas at startup

If you live in California you can only use OEM cats. This is due to CARB requirements. I had a older vehicle that the cat right off the engine was bad, to replace it the cost was almost as much as the vehicle was worth, because I could only get an OEM cat in California. Out of state the non-OEM cat was about 1/6 of the cost.

There is a bunch of info on cats in the forum, mostly about peiple.getting them stolen and how much $$ and how long they have to wait. If you search them it seems to be costing people $6,000 and up for replacement and some people have waited over three months for them to even get thier truck fixed. I'd find another route to go, some people mention new headers ect....idk much about that but I'm sure someone can chime in on it.

How many miles? Smell sulfur/rotten egg at all?

There are 4 cats, unlikely they all have a problem. Get an infrared temp gun and check all of them real quick. If one is clogged or gettin’ there, it’ll likely be significantly hotter than the others.

Sounds more like O2 sensors, or MAF sensor. Clean the MAF. Consider replacing the O2 sensors if you never have. They don’t have to fail to slowly go bad.

It has 209K miles. Never smelt rotten eggs/sulfur. I just happen to smell a gasoline smell but apparently it’s normal for rich start up.

14 year old truck with original exhaust system and very rusted underneath. Not sure how long cats last but I’m going to check oxygen sensors.
