So at 4,400 miles, my 2022 SR5 4x4 crewmax just stopped working while I was driving (turning from one road to another so 5/10mph). Engine stopped, all warning lights and messages the vehicle has displayed, and was ultimately towed because it will not start again. It will attempt to start for approx 5 seconds, sputter, then it stops. It’s at Toyota of Denton in Texas. So far no one I’ve talked to has any idea what the problem is.

I’m not really a forum guy, but I’ve seen enough of them to know I’ll probably get destroyed with that and “never buy the first gen of any vehicle” and whatever else they come up with. I just posted to share my shit show…maybe someone else has had something similar

I was going to jump to the wastegate turbo issue, but I dont think that problem completely killed the engine, it was more of a limp mode if I recall. An actual 3rd gen guy can comment further.

Question is, how did the tow truck driver get your truck on the rig without tow hooks? First zinger down.....

I have a little code reader in both of my vehicles, not that it helps now but next time (hopefully there isn't a next time) you can at least pull your codes before it disappears into the depths of the dealer

I just received my replacement LR CM TRDSport last week. It replaced my initial one, same specs that had the Turbo waste-gate failure back in April. OG Tundra crapped out after 80 miles and 3 days of ownership with very light driving. My dealer here was cool enough to buy it back and put me at the top of the list for the next allocation. Initial truck had a build date of March and there were noticeable interior rattles here and there, the speakers would flutter with any music that produced bass even at low levels and the AC on lower fan speeds sputtered. My replacement with a build date of June seems like a totally different truck, none of the above issues, nor any of the reported issues on this forum. I’ve only had it for a week but I’m very happy that I stuck with the Tundra. I had been looking and test driving Fords, Chevys and Dodges during the wait as there was no anticipated date of arrival for the replacement. Almost rage bought a 2021 Raptor, I’m glad I didn’t, the dealer out the door price was $110k. Whereas my Toyota dealer here sells at MSRP and was cool enough to take $500 off for the wait. It appears Toyota is making strides with the issues people are reporting and I’m sure they will take care of you and get your truck squared away.

When someone says catastrophic failure I think of a rod through the side of the block or similar.

This almost sounds like a crank or cam position sensor or a fuel pump.

Ya I guess “catastrophic” maybe wasn’t the best work. To me when my brand new 50k truck just shuts down, thrown rod or failed electronics, I’m the same amount of mad.

Catastrophic is in the eye of the beholder, lol. To me, brand new, expensive ass truck completely dying in a lane of traffic on a high speed road is pretty messed up. I'm from Texas and know a 50mph speed limit is a green light for 60+.

Fortunately for me, we have an excellent dealership here so they gave me a loaner after I limped the truck in. Next day they contacted me and advised me of the issue and asked me to come in immediately to discuss what I’d like to do, repair, with an unknown wait on parts or they buy it back and I get the next one in. I chose to wait for a new one as I didn’t want a new truck that was dismantled for the turbo repair. The wait felt like forever but I though it was a fair resolution so I did not go further than the Dealer to resolve it. I’m sure your dealer will have a satisfactory resolution for you and hope you get info soon as to what the problem is.

At least on the back of the tow truck, 2022 is getting better gas mileage than my 2016:rofl:

Maybe you'll be lucky and it just. a loose cable. Good luck.

Exactly. People were honking and passing to the left into oncoming traffic and on the right. Luckily it happened in the city I work so within a few minutes I had three cops behind me keeping from getting hit.

She’s a beauty. I’ve been waiting on mine. Servco just told me September availability. Wanted a SR5 Sport but thats a no go. Limited Hybrid it is.

Although I know there are issues, I just can see myself purchasing outside of Toyota. I’m hoping I won’t have any issues and that all current problems are fixed in mg build.

Stuff happens. When someone is pumping out 100k+ trucks a year there are bound to be a few with an issue. For all you know a connector is loose on the fuel pump or something.

You also bought the first model year of a truck that was a brand new design from the ground up. Literally every part of the truck is new. No other truck manufacturer does that. I don't care if its a Toyota or not, there are gunna be kinks to iron out.

I wouldn't be too mad about it. I certainly wouldnt expect a long term issue or to be worried about leaving you stranded again.

I agree. And expected issues here and there. I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt. But I’m still cautious. I’ll just have to be patient and see what the issue is and how they decide to handle it. I can tolerate the wind noises and infotainment glitches. I can’t tolerate what I expected to be a reliable vehicle to just shut down and get “we aren’t sure and I don’t know” from the mechanics. Again, time will tell. And I’ll try to keep updating as I learn details.

so how do we know it was catastrophic? Or are we just exaggerating a bit here?

I see your fuel gauge is reading over 5/8, is that reasonable based on miles since last fill? I remember reading about fuel gauge problems needing a software update to fix.

    Any mods done to it?
