Voodoo blue DC here, getting my ducks in a row for a chrome delete. I picked up some metal black rear bumper replacement ends (Ebay) and I'm not at all satisfied with the quality. Metalwork is poor, they are likely Chinese. Seller will take them back. I don't want to spend $3-400+ for OEM ends.
I could clean them up with some filler and reshoot them, but damn, I'm tired of fixing shit that isn't right. Ugg.
Anyway, question...if I just grabbed some skinz caps for the rear ends would my camper bolt/mounts look acceptable, or would there be noticeable distortion in the cap due to spacing between the caps and bumper?
I suppose I could just yank my chrome ends with the camper bolts and have them all satin black powder-coated too. That's the right way to do this, but a bit more spendy and same work as the replacement.
Thoughts? Anyone with the skinz caps that can opine?

My assumption is the shells won't fit due to the bolt.

Plasti-dip is easy and you can either spray with the bolt installed or remove it until its cured and then re-install the bolt.

Not necessarily, the shells would fit fine. I'd remove the bolt, drill through the shell and reinstall the powder coated (black) bolt with the shell in place. Curious if it would distort the fitment of the shell.

I hadn't considered plasti-dip, will research. Thanks for the insight.

Ah, that would make more sense
I'll let EC1 answer. I know the shells have the tape around the perimeter, but not sure how tight it would be where that bolt is. I would think it would be fine and wouldn't distort much.

The company is pretty active on this forum.... Maybe they could send you a blem so you could see what drilling does, or they might even already know and have an answer for you?

    Good luck!

Okay, so the unofficial stance is "You can do whatever you want with your Shellz after purchase but if you alter them, we will not take them back if it doesn't work out". but that's just me, bottom of the totem pole, social media guy. I'll ask some higher ups when they get in, but I assume it would be something along the same lines.

You can Plasti dip your chrome ones (it sticks really well) and then paint over the dip with Voodoo Blue (available in spray cans). I did my mirror caps with black this way. They are not body shop perfect, but they look great at any distance other than up close inspection for perfection. You may need a primer / base coat in between the dip and the paint for proper color reproduction. Some colors do not represent well over a black base.

I did get an official response, and it's basically exactly what I said. You're free to alter them however you choose, but alteration will void any warranty we provide on the product.

I think his question had more to do with would installing that bolt disfigure the cover.
Or more like would it ruin the smooth overall look with the bolt in place?
Well, neither one of those makes much sense but I think you know where I'm going with it..

From what I can tell the cover it pretty smooth against the chrome.
Although installing that bolt may put a slight indentation around that area of the plastic..

Oh crap, I was trying to cover the wrong base, maybe. He had said
So I figured drilling was a big part of the question... while I don't know the answer for sure because it's not recommended, I do know that the front parking sensors sometimes cause minor "dimples" when reinstalled so I imagine a bolt would do the same thing in the rear? It's hard to say for certain without doing it...

Yep, this. But thanks overall for the input here from everyone, much appreciated. I'm considering the plasti-dip given the bolt application. Although the shellz look to be the way to go for a quick and easy blackout.

Shellz would be the more permanent solution. However, with your situation, an alternative isn't a terrible idea. Just be prepared to re-apply the Plastidip after a year or so.

    Said plasti dip mirrors

    IMG_7414.png

also dipped my front and rear bumper previously on my 2000. Front held up well for about a year or two and then got some rock chips as expected. Rear looked new the whole 4-5 years it was on there.

Steel-it for the win! I've seen many bumpers get this from raw metal. Over chrome as well! Can't go wrong with spray on stainless steel! Doing my frontend caps today until I get a new bumper!
