I have a 2008 Toyota Tundra SR5 and I noticed that whenever I am driving I hear a clicking noise when I step on the brake pedal. The clicking noise is coming from the steering column. This sounds like the release latch for the transmission when you release from P to R. Is it normal to hear that clicking noise every time I step on the brakes? I am a new Tundra owner and do not know if this is a normal thing or should I get a part to replace? Thank you!

Mmmmm maybe normal.... my Celica's rear brakes click when I apply them, so does my 07 Tundra.

CV axles click that are going bad can make a clicking sound under load both when you accelerate or brake hard. Is yours a 4x4?

    Hello guys,

Here is a video of the noise whenever I step on the brakes. I can see the mechanism moving by the steering wheel. What is this part called and how do I change it?

Might be the brake lights activating? On my R6 and pretty much all bikes I've encountered, there is a very noticeable click as well, which is the brake lights activating first with very little brake pressure still.

Pretty sure my 2018 and my previous 2010 clicked. I’ll check it later.

That device unlocks the column shifter so you can shift out of park.
That unlocks the shifter so you can shift out of park. If the noise bothers you, you can try greasing it a little bit, but it needs to be there and is definitely going to make noise.

Normal. I always thought the clicking was relay but very clearly it's the park lock out physically in the column. Cool!

Thanks for confirming this is normal and not a defect. Will greasing it help reduce the noise? Was it always this noisy from when the truck was new?

That is what I thought initially. Not sure how to fix the noise or just leave it?

In a truck with a column shifter, that's where the lockout needs to be and the ability of the factory to quiet the thing down is space limited.

In a truck with a console shifter, the lockout can be more buried and there's more space to deaden the sound a bit.

Understood. I had a column shifter on my last Tundra and it made zero noise. For OP’s truck to click that loud every time he brakes is absolutely not normal. In fact that would drive me insane.

Thanks for the video, mine is exactly the same. I guess there's nothing to worry about.

Did you try squirting a little grease in there? Maybe white lithium grease?
