A co worker brought his crewmax Tundra with the 5.7 over for an oil change. He just got the truck. I get it up on the rack and discover it has the updated aluminum housing for the filter cartridge. I take it off and discover the cartridge is collapsed. Whoever installed the aluminum housing never transferred the perforated pipe from the plastic one. He ordered a new housing. Anybody else ever see this? 3C56516D-34E1-40BA-9A5C-87EA53D6CB5F.jpg

Only when that pipe is missing, that's it's primary purpose.

Looks like it worked effectively since the debris stain is even but yes could have been better with the insert, do dohs..

A perfect example of why you do your own maintenance, saves a little money but driving down the road knowing everything is ok is priceless.

The dorman oil filter housings are usually where I see this happen. When the filter collapses oil pressure drops too. Sometimes it’ll cause VVTI related codes

This very same thing just happened to me except I had the tube inside. I religiously run Mobil 1 and change every 5k miles. The last time I changed the oil, they were out of Mobil 1 and that Purple stuff was on sale. Bad decision! Stick to a good quality oil and change regularly.

I also heard people having this issue if they run synthetic oil to 10k miles. Need to change the filter every 5k miles (synthetic), 3k miles (conventional). I am starting to think about changing the filter every 3k regardless at this point.

Just for clarification, you are saying that following the Tundra maintenance guide causes this issue?

Absolutely not. I believe that the purple stuff I put in must not be rated for 5k miles. I have over 120k miles on my Tundra and never experienced this until I ran a different lubricant. I believe this stuff plugged the filter tight, causing the filter to collapse. If there are other issues, I guess I will find out next time.

Is that a Toyota filter housing and filter? I've never seen the metal tube collapse before.

I 2nd that ^^^ inquiry. Just. Plain. Weird.

I'm at 92k miles and do the oil AND filter at 10,000 miles. I'm just a distant lonely voice in the deep woods saying "never ever ever had any filter related issues."

Aluminum housing, Mobil 1 filter. I was wondering if I had a brain fart and put the tube into a Fram filter but did not. Has to be the Purple oil. Up in WI, I run 0w20 in the winter and just switched back to 5w20.
Use a good quality oil is all I can say. Lesson learned.

I use Toyota filters and 0w-40 and never had this happen. I do not believe it was the 5w-20 oil.

I have over 120,000 miles, always use Mobil 1 oil and filter (Fram filter as a last resort) and never had this issue until that one use of Royal Purple. Coincidence?

Since the top is crushed along with the sides, I would assume it interfered with the housing before I believed it was due to flow restriction. Flow restriction should have buckled the sides and not the top. That is my engineering opinion based on the photo but who knows. It's a crazy failure for sure.

Coincidence? Sure. All I have to offer is that I’ve used RP on several vehicles including this one and never had a collapsed filter. I wouldn’t think oil alone is capable of doing that, but stranger things have happened.

One thing is certain - the brand of oil had nothing to do with this.

That thing looks like someone took a pair of channel locks to it. Your saying that happened while installed in the truck? I can't think of any reason that that would happen. The oil pressure would need to be off the scale to do that.

This is why I decided against getting an aftermarket filter housing, or one from another vehicle.
An original housing with an original stand pipe that's still attached properly is all that will ever be on my truck.
