Apparently this guy has done it. $5800. CNG runs about $2/gal compared to $5/gal where he lives. 18gal CNG tank lives in his bed. He says the fuel economy difference is negligible, and it will eventually pay for itself due to how much cheaper CNG is.

I just thought it was cool. Not sure I’d want to give up half of my bed space though.

It’s cool he has done this, but like you said, not worth sacrificing the bed.

We *had* a large fleet of CNG trucks at my job for a few years (with modern tech, late 20teens)….don't do it, all sorts of issues that makes it a fools errand.

Fuel maybe cheaper, but the fuel economy hit is not negligible, it’s like half in a heavy truck, combine that with way less power, which gets more notable in a heavier truck.

Conversion issues, constant fueling issues, capacity/range issues and maintenance was also a huge factor in eventually quietly walking away from the experience for the company.

The only benefit is being slightly more “green”, but really with the additional resources poured into other aspects of the conversion, outside of fuel itself, it’s doubtful it’s actually an net positive difference.

I've known this was possible for awhile, there are companies that sell the kits if you Google. Its pretty damn cool especially if you have natural gas at home you could fill up at home all while still keeping gasoline as an option. It would take a long time for it to pay for itself though.

You can’t fill it with Natural Gas at home, it’s compressed natural gas, compressed to 3,000+ PSI (which is part of the maintenance and parts nightmare). Your natural gas service at your home is likely sub 10 PSI.

    This^^^

We had some CNG converted vehicles at my last company. The power loss was substantial. There was a large dent under the fuel pedal for sure.

well that makes it far less cool. Apparently is a thing though, obviously requires some type of equipment I assume. https://fpuc.com/commercial/natural...e natural gas, used at local gasoline stations.
