    Hey all,

New here, coming from being a repeat F-150 owner and being burned badly with my last truck - A 21 F-150 PowerBoost that was riddled with gremlins. Pretty much all mechanical/drivability related.

That said, I know Toyota is known to be the most reliable brand out there but, in my research, I've found a number of complaints about the Gen3. Therefore, I'm wondering what the most common issues are and, generally, if the community here would recommend buying one.

Would truly appreciate any insights/feedback you're willing to share.

The only complaints there is not enough of these trucks to go around......I love mine. Everything about it. No trouble except it was out of alignment and had to wait 8 months for a second key. Did I say that I love my truck ?

I bought my 2023 at the end of May this year and have put roughly 5k miles on it. The only issues I've really only had were the noisy driver seat (only happens if I'm moving around repositioning myself) and the gas gauge issue (which is an easy reset and only happened a couple times). I had 35s and a Westcott lift since about 1k miles and have enjoyed the truck so far (ttv6 has been way more pleasurable to drive compared to my 2018 that I had 295/70s on, minus the sounds of that V8). If you can get a good deal, I say go for it. The internet will always be full of people who had bad experiences vs those that are not. But that's not to say the Gen3 isn't without its problems, just that people who aren't having issues won't be posting nearly as much as those that are. I think the times we live in now also is causing the uptick in production issues across all brands, some just worse than others.

Thanks for the replies so far. I did find a couple of seemingly good deals - A new 2023 Platinum for $63k and a new 2023 1794 with TRD suspension for $64k. Both are about $5k off MSRP. Can’t decide which I prefer but both seem like a strong deal.

From what I’ve seen, anything below MSRP is a good deal. I got $4500 off MSRP on my ‘23 Platinum. So far (2300 miles) completely satisfied.

I can get you a tundra at invoice aside from a TRD pro . But they’re in KS.

tundras are good mechanically. But the QC issues are abundant. But their minor annoyances if you don’t mind the wind noise or occasional creaks and squeaks

Appreciate the offer! I’m up in the PNW though.

Creaks and squeaks are annoying but nothing compared to, for example, the constant vibration in the cab under any load on the highway. Like a broken motor mount or horrid wheel balance issue but no… Just a “characteristic” of the truck.

I have just over 20k miles on my 3rdGen. My biggest gripe has been the tire alignment, most notably a issue on the Pro's. My brakes just started a noise when braking in reverse, I think I got some sand in them from a recent offroading trip on the beach.
No truck is perfect, but so far this one has been without major issues.

Toyota haven't figured it out what they did wrong with the new V6 engine, so they are eating main bearings. Gen 3 people would beat me up and say it is only 0.0000000something % of failure rate, but it is way up from 0% the now killed V8 has had. But you demanded information, so here you go.

Is it only a super small percentage of engines that have had this issue?

To your point, Toyota has always been the 300k+ mile monster but they’ve also always been extremely conservative with their engines resulting in pretty underpowered setups. There’s obviously a correlation there. Now that they’re staying to make power with these new TT motors, some things are bound to happen… And as long as it isn’t a common issue impacting a notable percentage, I don’t find that to be a major concern.

Regardless, thank you for that insight as that’s a new piece of info for me!

The 1794 with TRDOR is good as youll get, it has the MTS and rear locker. Cant really add that on later. Not to mention the very plush interior

Haha… Why haven’t you offloaded it and bought something else? My truck gave me issues and only lasted about 6 months before I sent it packing.

Thanks for that feedback. I’m just struggling with all the chrome bits… The interior is incredible! And I am a big fan of the TRD config.

Seems to be a smaller percentage that otherwise would warrant a NHTSA investigation.

The fact is no one knows if the failure happens momentarily, like a stuck oil pump relief valve would do, or if it is slowly accumulating over miles driven. You may be babying your truck, but it is still would be dying in your caring hands.

Ugh… But remember market value and book value are different. I feel you though. I lost about $8-9k on my truck in those 6 months. Didn’t care, wanted it gone.

Interesting… Very un-Toyota-like for sure. Is it only on the 3.5 gas engine or also the 3.4 Hybrid?

the chrome is hideous, but many on here have deleted it thru wraps and paint. I believe the '24 MY comes with more un chromed trims fyi

All V35A engine variants Toyota build since 2018, both in US and Japan. Something in the core design of the engine is off. I don't know why it takes so long for Toyota to fix it.

How did you go about color matching? Plastidip? And what did it cost you, if I may ask?

Of course it is. Here's my thinking:

    - spans over many years -> not a bad bearings batch
    - happens to engines build in US and Japan (where people feel more responsible for quality) -> not an assembly line problem
    - happens anywhere on the planet, even where a more viscous oil is used (I think in UAE they use 5w30?)
    - happens to Land Cruiser, which totally kills the brand image of the most indestructible vehicle ever

So it must be something with the design.

Oh, too funny… I found an earlier post of yours on these and was just researching them. Are they actually decent quality and don’t look like you stuck a cover over the trim?

Your pics look great (love that color) but I’m hyper meticulous and would be bugged by any non-OEM looking gaps, etc.

You don't know in fact. It may be eating the bearings, you're just not aware of it.

OP came here because of perceived Tundra reliability, which it earned with gen1 and gen2, not gen3.

Funny how some non-Gen3 owners seem compelled to constantly respond negatively to Gen3 threads.

My 2023 non-hybrid 1794 has almost 6K miles on it. My biggest problem to date has been the brakes shudder if they get hot going down long mountain passes. I've learned that manually downshifting to avoid moderate/heavy braking solves that problem, but it's still concerning. They don't shudder under normal driving conditions.

My only other minor peeve is the automated Lane Centering feature is poorly implemented, IMO. It abruptly ping pongs the truck side to side as it hunts for the lines on either side of the lane. It's no big deal because I will never use that feature, anyway.

Otherwise, I'm skeptically enjoying my new Tundra. The fuel mileage increase over my previous 2015 Tundra is significant. The handling is much improved over previous Gens. And some of the creature comforts are nice. Time will tell if Toyota's legendary reliability remains true.

I came to tundras.com. Lately it is mostly gen3 threads on the landing page. You know, about engine failures, rattles, wind noise, etc.
