Consumer Reports published today their 2022 reliability ratings. While Toyota overall scored high and ranked #1, the new Tundra is the least reliable of all Toyotas, with "below average" reliability. Not surprisingly ...

Personally I think it's way too early for them to be making reliability predictions. Not nearly a big enough sample size.

I’m curious why they consider the handling to be clumsy? I feel that handles rather well for a full size truck, also wondering how they got a 3.4l engine mentioned in the OPs post? ;)

They said that since Ford's Ecoboost is a 3.5 liter, they decided to call theirs a 3.5 liter and depending how you round up, if bend enough rules, it's a 3.5...

    Rci skid plate,
Way too soon and it’s also a first year (which we all know is when the bugs get worked out) I’m very happy with my truck. Comfy ride. Tons of power and the towing compared to previous model is so much better. Mpg’s aren’t bad for a full size truck. I will give it a low score on the infotainment system. Mine is rather glitchy. Otherwise Toyota didn’t let me down imo

I'm really disappointed to read CR say that they heard from one member about a leaking roof. ONE member? Hum, are they down to determining their ratings based on anything that ONE person can say? And how do they know that's even true? Not one person has ever exaggerated to make a point, got their story misunderstood, or flat out lied on a survey before...it's never happened :fingerscrossed:
Now I wonder about all of the other ratings :monocle:

Pretty fair assessment. The powertrain will prob be okay but the craftsmanship and quality of the new gen tundra is sloppy and disappointing.

How do you determine if something is reliable or not and most people haven't got many miles on them.

MONEY TALKS, BULLSH#T WALKS, that's how.

Pretty interesting how the human brain works. When a product is doing good, everyone that owns raves about it. But when the product is doing bad, then the one doing the critiquing is wrong. Kinda like people were made to believe that MSRP was the best you were going to get, lol.

To reiterate what everyone else said it’s simply to soon…

Secondly Consumer Reports have never had any good to say about Toyota trucks. I remember when I was researching my 2nd Gen Tacoma, according to them the Flintstone car (not literally) would have been a better choice. They are highly bias.

Consumer Reports lost their way some time ago. They simply do not prioritize those things that most consumers consider important anymore. Their role, as they see it, is not to analyze and report on the quality of products but instead influence it. They are advocates on a crusade to improve safety and environmental concerns (like a bias against lower mpg vehicles) and that is their focus so, if you are interested in an objective assessment of functionality and reliability, their rankings need to be taken with a grain of salt. Any EV or Hybrid is the greatest thing since sliced bread until the data comes in and....it's not. They loved that Chevy Volt when it was introduced. Their initial review of the 3rd gen will be in the tank until more data comes in. At that point, they will begrudgingly acknowledge it.

Quite right, Sir! The Mrs. and I were long-time subscribers to Consumer Reports for years and dropped our subscription when we found how arbitrary they are in their ratings. They also stray out of their wheelhouse into areas not consumer related.

Paying MSRP is for suckers, if you want to go there. They suckered you in to paying what it’s not worth and now the market is going down. Making your truck worth even less.

Interesting. When I used to be on the Jeep forums, all the Toyota trolls used CR reports to rub reliability in the faces of the Jeep crowd, smugly proclaiming CR as the be-all end-all de-facto proof of fact to end all debate. Now that CR is somewhat critical of a single Toyota, out come the torches and pitchforks!

In reality, they are correct. It's representative of how they scored every other car (including other Toyotas), and the new Tundra has had some growing pains. The 3rd gen has to earn it's reputation like all others, and I'm sure it will as the bugs get worked out and supply/production issues are resolved. But for now, it's fair to say it hasn't been as good as expected due to Toyota's overall past reputation for quality and reliability.

You’re right, it only money but it doesn’t mean you have to give it away on material things. Instead I prefer to enjoy it with my family instead of making a millionaire richer. And just because you drive a 22 doesn’t mean shit. Did they give you a cookie with that? I was driving a 2020 in 2020, so what. You make it seem like we have to keep up with the Jones. But hey it’s your money, waste it how you see fit.

Oh, by the way, those guy you talk about will be buying 23 instead of 22 at a lower price.

Nobody is saying you need to keep up with the Jones. A lot of people like their 3rd gens and they talk about it. I see TONS of posts from 2.5 gen owners talking trash about the 3rd gen, but I don't really see any 3rd gen owners talking trash about earlier generations. If you feel like you need to keep up with the Jones, my guess is that feeling is coming from within.

MSRP is still the best going rate around best I can tell. Are there dealers, buddy networks etc, where you can get below MSRP? sure. But there are entire states or regions where MSRP is a "bargain" still. Very sad to be sure. But...it is the free market at work also. This will turn around when supply starts to equal or exceed demand.

Remember the days when one could walk into a dealer lot and point to a car and end up driving it away in a couple of hours, and at a price several $k below sticker? That will return. Only question is when. In the mean time we all have our personal reasons for spending more $ on a new vehicle, be it truck or otherwise. My personal reason has something to do with lost opportunity of family vacations with a travel trailer while family members are risking "aging out" of the traveling. So yea, paying "too much" has turned into "paying what it takes to enjoy family time".

    IMHO

Depends on how you look at it. Not exactly talking trash, but plenty have no issues pointing out just how much better the 3rd Gen is over the 2.5 Gen.

I myself have pointed out some of the advantages of 2.5 Gens (e.g., proven reliability; more than enough power for what we bought it for; and so on) and are told something akin to "IOW, you just can't afford it/are jealous/etc."

This conversation is devolving and is off topic now. I think we need to just let it sit and fall down the thread list.
