We were discussing spark plug changes the other day do I decided to look at the maint schedule to see what the requirements are. Crazy as it may seem the only change appears at 120,000 miles. So I am assuming we have iridium. Other eye openers...

NO requirement to ever change differential or transfer case oil (lots of "inspects")
NO requirement to ever change transmission fluid. (no requirement even to inspect)
NO requirement to ever change coolant

Not quite sure I buy into all this as I usually change diff and xfer fluid fairly early and coolant and trans fluid at 100k. At least I saw one normal thing which is to lube the driveshaft u-joints at every 15k. Now I feel better! ;-)

And yes, the schedule for oil/filter change intervals is 10k. I don't like that, either.

Why suggest maintenance when you are in the business of manufacturing and selling replacement versions?

Interesting that my wife’s 2022 Lexus recommend replacement at 60k. I would have thought Toyota would be on a similar schedule.

I believe the ‘22 maintenance manual calls for plug change at 40k.

I have a 2007 Tacoma, Owned a 2015 Tundra, both had almost exactly the same wording as you referenced. My 2007 Tacoma is 145k strong mileage on same coolant, tranny, etc. I inspect but they are all solid.

    Trust in your Tundra ;-)

Edit: I even went to a very reputable and trustworthy mechanic when the Tacoma hit 125k and asked him about changing the tranny fluid. His response was "Why would you want to waste your money like that?" Tranny is rock solid. He offered, but said they are very reliable systems.

I don't necessarily not believe it. A lot of engineering went into this powertrain despite the QC issues.

Turbo charged engines, probably a good idea to change oil more frequently... I plan on changing mine every 5k. but to each their own. Toyota may have cracked the code to having highly efficient turbos that require minimal maintenance.

My bad. The Google apparently pulled up the Gen 2 (or 2.5?) Tundra schedule.

BMWs only have oil changes once a year no matter kms put on and they have turbo motors single and twin, they don’t have dip sticks to even check the oil. These are factory turbo motors, Toyota will know how long their oil lasts. To say a turbo motor needs oil change every 5k because it’s turbo is just spending more money, why not do it at 1k or 2k or 3k or every second Thursday

So let me get this straight. I can buy a BMW and drive it non stop for let’s say 100k in a year and the engine won’t blow up? I am going to go sell the tundra today and buy a BMW. Impressive

15, maybe even 10 years ago this would have been true. With advancements in turbo bearings, construction, etc, as well as advancements in motor oils, you can keep 10k intervals for your oil changes. If you don't believe it, you can test yourself! send your oil samples to Blackstone Labs or similar for analysis and they can tell you what the ideal oil change interval would be after 3/4 samples. On my 2021 Bronco (twin turbo v6) Blackstone recommended a 12k interval.

As far as trans/diff fluid changes, most manufacturers use a long life oil that will last longer than most vehicles. doesn't make sense to change it. By regularly inspecting, you can see if something is going wrong and address that as necessary.

This is exactly why I bought pre paid maintenance from Jerry at a low cost.

Regarding the coolants, see below. Change both @ 100k.

As for the trans, I'm pretty sure Toyota nixed fluid changes for the trans when they implemented "sealed" automatic transmissions quite awhile ago. 200k miles on my old 2012 4runner with the original transmission fluid.

For transfer case & diff changes, the manual recommends every 30k based on your driving habits & location. Otherwise, it's an inspect item.

On my Tacoma with the WS I changed it out at 100k miles using a DIY flush method out of a disconnected trans cooling return line. A couple quarts at a time, refill, repeat a few times, then top off for final fill. I didn't get an analysis but the old stuff looked brand new. Not that I towed with that truck.

Yup, and it opens the door to them trying to sell you stuff you don't need like fuel injection and throttle body cleaning, etc.

I changed the transmission "fluid" on a '98 4runner with 230k. It was like thick black coffee.

After that I'm a firm believer in changing the fluid every so often.

I'll review my prepaid maintenance contract. I did read it and it didn't mention any exclusions. The spark plugs are listed in my truck regular maintenance manual as a requirement at 40k

My prepaid maintenance contract states that Factory recommended services referenced in my Warranty and services guide (normal driving conditions) are covered. Meaning that spark plugs are covered... So are air filters and covered.

I studied the prepaid maintenance... For the most part it's just oil changes and tire rotations, spark plugs, air filter and cabin air filter. That's it... But these should be covered.

The 40k spark plug replacement is only for the emissions warranty which dies at 36k. my dealer every time i go in recommends a brake fluid flush and replacement, and i actually laugh when the suggest it. by the way 2022 Tundra Limited i-force/i-max Wind Chill Pearl..also had to replace the stock Falken tires at 33k as they were seriously compromised. replaced with michelin defenders and lost 2.5 mpg...just a heads up.

Some parts of the emissions have a 8/80k warranty. But yeah I don't see the covering the spark plugs for that long since it's a wear/tear item. The stock Flaken are the cheap version, it's been discussed before. They have less thread than if you bought them from a tire store. As for brake fluid, that's always over looked. It's recommended to replace every 2y/30k. Its hydroscopic so that why. 1 bottle and probably 30min and you can flush the system. Cheap maintenance.
