I’m new here looking to get a tundra as my dd and to tow our camper occasionally. Looking for a 2021 or older. So far I’ve only found crewmax trucks, but there is a nice double cab on the other side of the state, like 3hrs away, so can’t just go check it out easily. So I’m wondering how much smaller the back seat is in the dc? It’s just 3 of us, kid is 7 years old. We also have a 4runner so if need more space we can drive that.
I do mountain bike and like to be able to put my bike either inside my truck currently (f-350) or in the bed. So was thinking a longer bed than the 5.5 would be nice.

The DC has decent back seat and the longer bed is a plus. I have ridden in one quite a bit and find it ok. Really need to look at one to see if it would work for your family. CrewMax almost has too much room in rear seat at expense of bed length.

I definitely regret choosing the cab over the bed

I love my DC. The back seats are adequate for my needs. Very rarely do I have any rear seat passengers, but I haul stuff in the bed quite often. I also did not want a sunroof, so the DC is the right truck for me.

I love my DC. Kids will eventually grow into it.

We opted for bed space vs cabin space - and what’s great is my DC is column shifter w/ bench seat.

The chicken wing is rare, I didn't like the weird seat/console thing.

Double cab for the win. I have 2 boys. 10 and 12. They have plenty enough room in the back and I keep all 3 of our bikes in the bed. Wife sits up front. So it should be adequate enough space for you. But more importantly it’s all practical space in the DC.

Yeah it is. I honestly wanted the center console, but ultimately found out that I have less space with the center console and more cup holders. Lol

Check the build link in my signature.
I had a double cab when my kids were younger. 11 years and just short of 300k miles, I traded for a crewmax. While I don’t often have people in the back seat, when I do they are full grown adults. That extra space in the cab is useful for that, but the really short bed can be annoying.

I don’t regret the CM, but to do it again I would probably go back to the DC.

I have a 8 and 9 year old and the DC is great. A little tight at times but the wife and kids prefer it to her Highlander and my 2017 4Runner that I traded in…

    Zero regrets

I've had both a DC and Crewmax. The DC was ok when the kids were young but once they got older the backseat really wasn't big enough.
I haven't ran into any issues with the smaller truck bed even when dealing with mountain bikes or dirtbikes. Overall I'm much happier with the Crewmax.

    same.
I had a DC and now have a CMAX. I’ve never run short of bed space even when doing extended camping trips and hauling firewood.

Look up the comparison video on YouTube that Mike on Last Line of Defense does on old v new and Crewmax vs doublecab. It's like 8 inches more in the cm.

I love my CM. Only complaint is the bed is just a little to short at times. I think they look better than the DC, but thats my opinion. that said, we now have an infant. Every now and then I get in the back to feed or whatever. There is more room in the back than the front.

That is a little insane, especially if I could get more bed with a DC. So I would say look at them both and see what fits your style. My fav difference is the full roll down rear window, but that can be added as done on here.

I have a DC. We have done 2 very long road trips with a 10 and 7 year old in back. They are fine, but the crew max would be WAY nicer. Now you have an empty back seat for the handbag and ice chest so thats a plus on road trips.
when your kid is 12 and wants to bring a friend camping, im sure you will wish you had the crew max

I have made plenty of 4 hour road trips down to the beach with 5 of us in my DC. 3 kiddos in the back (one car seat) and plenty of room in my truck box for stuff we don't want to get wet should it rain on the way down, and big stuff like a canopy, chairs, spare tire, etc.

The two older bonus kiddos are 13 and 11.

It's all fun and games until you need a truck, the CM falls a bit short (literally)

    Thanks all for the replies.

is it safe to assume, everything else being equal between a CM and DC truck, the DC would likely have a higher payload rating? I’m waiting for a picture of the payload sticker from the dealership.

We have a 21 DC and a 5th Gen 4Runner. Between the two, the DC is roomier inside since it is a larger vehicle overall. Our kids are older and quite large (6+ feet each), and they fit comfortably in the back seat of the DC. We chose the DC over the Crew because of the bed length and it looks better! :boink: @Florida AF

tell that to anyone sitting in the back seat that isn't a child lol.
i suppose the overarching theme here is that we all like the trucks we bought. not once has not having a foot more bed worked against me but then again, someone working in construction might see it differently.

Neighbor has a DC and three kids, he's had it the entire 8 years I've known him. The kids are now 19, 16, & 13 and they do just fine.

I bought a CM bc I loved the space in the cab. I wanted my kids, the dogs, and the ability to sleep in the cab on our annual camping trips. I also liked the aesthetic looks of the CM better, but obv that's a personal preference.

I REALLY wish the 2nd Gen Tundra had the CM w the 6.5' bed like the 3rd Gen.

I won't even lie, I considered the 3rd Gen for that very reason, but I couldn't stomach the extra $20k that would have cost at the time I bought.

When my oldest leaves the house, I will likely send my 2021 w him and snag a last model yr of the 3rd Gen (likely Gen 3.5 I would assume by then).

Regardless, I think whatever your pref is for DC vs CM, it comes down to you. The kids will be fine in either.

i'm in the same boat as @pvn.beluga but don't have kids. we can easily get 6 adults in our DC when running shuttles, etc. the longer bed was most important to me as i haul a lot of gear and also like to sleep in it. couldn't be happier :)
maybe the OP could find one of each model nearby and ask to "test fit" in person?

Well, I’m not a kid and ride in DC backseat often. I think the rear seat room is fine. The rear seat room in 2nd Gen is far, far better than the AccessCab rear seat in a 1st Gen.

My truck is a CrewMax. I bought it for the larger back seat due to family. The DC rear seat would have been fine, and the longer bed would have come in handy more often. That's all.

I would have absolutely bought a CrewMax w/ a 6.5’ bed if it was available when I bought mine.

However, anyone complaining about rear seat leg room in my DC is free to walk if they’d rather. It works great for my wife and I, our 10 month old, a German Shepherd, 2 mountain bikes, a cooler and a boat load of crap on our road trips.

Well the one I wanted to go look at apparently sold yesterday. Kind of bummed as it was a voodoo blue one. Oh well back to my search, army green is at the top of my list of colors, but that blue looks really nice also.

Crewmax for me. I have an '18 that I bought new. I've moved appliances, yard debris, gym equipment, furniture, and landscaping blocks without issue.

Exactly twice have I needed to rent a trailer for more hauling capacity, and it just wasn't a pain to do so.
Once my kids got old enough to drive, I have occasionally sat in the back, and boy do I like having all that room!

They're still out there! That voodoo is really cool and it will become more rare. Keep your eyes peeled and you'll land one. Good luck!

DC here. I use the bed more than the back seat in the cab. I'd pull a shift across the country in the back seat if I rotated up front every few hours.
