CV Axle LH-Side removal Question

    Planning to replace my LH-side CV axle. Looking at my yota bible... it states to use a "slide hammer equipped with a special hooked adapter". Is this adapter + slide hammer necessary just to pop out that CV? I'm guessing there's a clever hack to get it off without that hooked adapter, correct?

    I have a bigass slide hammer FWIW... and looks like there's a hooked adapter of sorts in the box.

    I used a screw driver and worked up to a pry bar on both OEM and Import Direct. Be gentle but it'll pop out. Hook adapter might be helpful to prevent mangling?'

    Expect some gear oil to come out if you don't drain the diff.

    I stuck the tip of a long prybar in the gap and then gave it a few wacks with a mallet. I think I slightly increased the force each time and it popped right out on the 2nd or 3rd hit. No special tools needed.

    I use a block of wood and hit it with a hammer from down by the oil pan. You can hit, rotate a little, hit again, and so on. If you ever do that with a good CV axle be sure to use rags to meet it from contacting sharp things and tearing a boot and use a bungie cord around the hub side so it doesn't fly out and hit the ground. If you aren't reusing if then no biggie

    Not specific to the Tundra, but I've always used a medium pry bar on the bottom side and grab the top side with my hand.

    Then I pull/put downward pressure with my hand while prying. I can usually get it to pop right out. Sometimes I have to rotate the axle until the c-clip inside lines up better.


    Rarely do I need a hammer, block of wood, etc.
