I got a 2015 tundra with 5.7. The passenger side head ticks like a diesel. I'm assuming it's the VVT I have read about in other posts. Can the head be removed with the motor still in the truck???

I don’t know of any vehicle that the cylinder head can’t be removed while the engine is in the vehicle. I think the real question is what are you going to do once you remove the head?

I thought of either taking it to a machine shop or replacing it with one from a salvaged tundra. The tick drives me nuts.

Have you tried checking your oil level? I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a valve tick from low levels. Check it and add some marvel red mystery oil

Oh, believe me, there are plenty. But I don't think they are any of our trucks.

Don't they all tick...? I've never heard a Toyota or Lexus that didn't.

    Bingo.

Mine only sounds like a diesel if the engine is cold and to me it sounds like piston slap. Not the head.

Usually a normal sound with our 5.7's. Try Lucas Upper Cylinder Treatment. It quiets things down. Marvel Mystery Oil is no mystery. Mostly mineral oil......and generic solvent.

It worked well on my 5.3 Silverado with a valve tick, figured worth a shot ‍:notsure:

Nothing wrong with Marvel oil at all. It does act as a lubricant but it does contain a solvent too. I've used it before but switched to the Lucas treatment full time.

I will try the Lucas oil treatment today. See if there's any change. The tic has been louder than before over the last 12,000 miles and 2 oil changes. I use the factory recommended synthetic and my truck has @ 100,000 on it. Mostly hwy. No off roading

Tell me your not going to change the head for a ticking noise? You need to diag the issue first. Could be as simple as the VVTI control valve.

Eh. A lot of them tick. It’s either piston slap, a lifter, or a manifold leak..

Piston slap on a warm engine, doughtful. Manifold leak would cause a check engine light. Lifter is possible on a motor that hasn't had regular oil changes. VVTI is also possible.

Manifold leaks won’t set codes all the time. The 4.7 is famous for the manifold tick and they rarely set lights. Only seen one 5.7 with it and new manifold gasket fixed it (had just had the starter replaced but not that gasket)

Piston slap is cold yes, I wasn’t sure if he was talking cold or hot.

Vvti gears typically rattle when cold and oil pressure builds. Never actually heard one tick

I’ve had one rav4 2.5l with lifter tick and the car had regular oil changes. An engine flush and putting some good synthetic oil cured that.

Intake manifold leak would cause a misfire on the cylinder and throw the light on. Wrong oil viscosity or infrequent oil changes can cause VVTI noise and lifter noise (tick, rattle whatever you want to call it). We are talking the most probable cause for a noise on the 5.7 engine without a MIL. VVTI, lifter or an exhaust leak (maniflod) are going to be the most common.

Just to add, I've had a VVTI control valve go bad on a 5.7 and made for a noisy VVTI.

Put some Z-Max in the engine oil. They sell it either pre-measured or by the large bottle. The pre-measured is a different color but it’s all the same formula. Just dye added. I used it in my ‘04 every 6 months. Quieted the tick a lot.

I added the Lucas oil treatment yesterday. Got down to 40 degrees last night. Hardly any ticking noise this a.m. Huge difference. Must be a lifter?

They all tick. And, they do not have lifters nor rockers. Overhead cam lobes slaps directly on the valve spring buckets. All 32 lobes. Hence the ticking noise. And 0-20 oil.

I would like to see Toyota at an oil squinter during cold start to help lubricate the cams better. But that's for a different engine.

Which Lucas product are you all recommending here. I see a few mentioned. Fuel Treatment or Oil Stabilizer?

I agree that it’s good you didn’t tear your engine apart for this noise. It’s probably the normal VVT noise. If you replaced parts it would still do it. Some people say different brands of oil make it quieter, but I don’t remember which ones.

I think this is the Lucas treatment they are using.

Run 5w30 synthetic motor oil . 0w20 is recommended strictly to satisfy CAFE regulations , Toyota says to use 5w30 or even 10w30 in the 5.7's over in Saudi Arabia and other hot climate countries. Also there is no bearing differences causing the need for 0w20 .
I had the same annoying "diesel sound" in my 2019 tundra , it was solved by simply switching to 5w30 , I run 5w30 from April to September . I believe it adds better protection for when towing or work horsing the engine in hot summer weather , During the winter I switch back to 0w20 , I live up in Alberta Canada and its gets cold , I want the 0-weight for cold starts .
