Damn, 6.2’s make gen3 recall seem minor

‘21-‘24. GM 6.2’s in all models. Crankshaft or connecting rod fail.
And who would you rather work with to fix it, GM or Toyota?

I would not even consider a GM with the 5.3/6.2 right now. Older or deleted AFM...yep.

I have heard nothing but good with the 3.0 mini max, but the people I know don't do short trips with them either.

I’ve driven a friends near new Denali 6.6 and I really like it. That said, his service experience has been awful. The dealer dicks him around on everything.

That totally sucks. The local GM dealerships are great. Ford isn't horrible and Ram is laughable.

    Toyota isn't great either.

LOL, this should lay the 0W 20 oil Debate to rest.

Vehicles that pass inspection are to be refilled with a higher weight oil (0W-40 versus the standard 0W-20), a new oil fill cap, an “owner’s manual insert,” and may be returned to inventory.

I moved from a '24 Tundra Platinum to a '25 Sierra 1500 Denali Ultimate with the 3.0 Duramax LZ0. It is an incredible powerplant. Not as quick off the line as the Tundra but once it hits it's torque curve it pulls hard and just purrs along the highway. I'm averaging 28-29mpg, range is 650-700 miles per tank.

There were some minor reliability issues with the prior gen LM2 but they have been addressed in the LZ0. It's a solid motor.

I must say the fit, finish, and features in the GMC is several notches above the Tundra. I do have the Ultimate and the materials used in the interior are top notch, so I can't speak for other trim levels. I was skeptical about the usefulness of SuperCruise but I now use it all the time, it just works. Turning radius tighter in the GMC, it's marginally easier to maneuver. Far less wind noise. Adaptive dampers make for a nice ride. I think I like the seats and driving position better in the Tundra.

I traded my Platinum, and it is still sitting on the GMC dealer's lot. It's been two months. It's a beautiful WCP with TRD OR, 11k miles. They keep dropping the price, but with the deals on new units it's a tough sell. Mine was a 9/23 build and with the speculation that the recall would be extended to the early '24's I decided to make the move.

Are you in a big or small market?
His most recent thing was that the truck wouldn’t turn off. A known problem. $1400 for the steering column switch assembly. They said it would take days to fight it. He said screw and paid them. Big market Miami.
I’d hate to have them pass judgement on a crankshaft…

Yup & agree 110% when GM tried to replicate dodges MDS with there version of DOD it just fucked everything thing up.
Mine blew up @ 121K then the tranny blew up just out of sympathy for the motor and for this I jumped ship and trying Toyota.

Funny, I was pretty darn close going with a Silverado with the 6.2 before buying my tundra in 2020. Wanted to turn it into a jackel like pax power does. Pretty darn happy I went with the Tundra.

Well our county has 765K people the last I checked. So pretty decent size (hell of a lot more than I want.)

GM stopped being reliable in 07 with the introduction of AFM/DoD in Gen IV's. Some engines were ok, but the trucks had other issues with the newer transmissions too.

Ooofff. Let's not even get into the transmissions.

There is a reason I decided not to go with a C8Z06 or CT5 V Blackwing. The AFM failures just turned me off.

Here we go again, with the wonderful 3.0 from GM. I had two 2024 3.0 Diesels here is a quick read of why I will not purchase a GM again.

The first was a GMC AT4 with DEF problems almost leaving me stranded 1500 miles from home on a summer trip. Causing me to try and have the sensors repaired/replaced at a GM dealer in Coeur d’Alene, ID. Service Advisor said three weeks before I could get an appointment with one of their diesel mechanics to determine that I needed the sensors and an unknown time to get the parts. The truck was counting down to limp mode from 100 miles but resetting randomly so I decided to risk it and head closer to a dealer I was aware of. I risked it and made it back took it to a dealership in Arizona who ordered the parts with unknown availability, ended up taking six weeks for a sensor. They did rent and cover the cost for a Chevy Malibu to drive, I had to be 600 plus miles to drive right away.

My selling Dealer 1,000 miles away gave me a decent deal on a 2024 AT4X a nice truck. I drove the new truck back to Arizona parked in the driveway and the next morning oil was on the driveway. I dealt with that for a month after taking it into the same Arizona Dealer who misdiagnosed the oil leak and told me the parts were not available and again no idea when they would be. I then drove back to selling dealer to have rear mail seal replaced, the real problem, I ended up waiting a extra week to get parts.

I ended up trading for my current Tundra. No manufacturer is immuned to manufacturing a lemon, however, GM’s business plan of not maintaining inventories of replacement parts to correct manufacturing defects and rushing all parts available into the manufacturing process with limited inventory to help existing owners is not acceptable to me.

I love the diesel motor but the sensors and DEF issues I had and others have had are a no go for me. To each his or her own.

I own a 2023 Yukon with the 6.2. It is a beast that smokes the Tundra 5.7 100/100 times. It's the fastest car I've ever owned I think, and the turning radius is impressive even vs ours. We have been very happy with the car and our local dealer was (just got bought by another "local" dealer) amazing and the service there has been great, even after the new owners.

That said, when I bought this Yukon, I KNEW it was a problem, and I was hoping GM would eventually have to fix it before we ran into an issue. I am guessing a lot of 3rd gen guys think the same when they bought. I would prefer to work with Toyota as they did it voluntarily and GM waited years and for the feds to force them. Toyota will always be better in that regard. I will hopefully hear from our dealer in the next month or two about this and see how the process goes. IMO GM makes the only good looking new truck, but most of their vehicles I'd want nothing to do with. The yukon is the family road tripper/grocery getter and there are limited options in that size.

The real problem isn’t a design issue IMO. It’s poor quality steel. It’s why Toyota 5.7 valve springs occasionally fail. It’s why GM 5.3 and 6.2 engines get lifter failure. It’s the cause for Hemi 5.7 and Pentastar 3.6 “tick” and lifter / cam follower failures. Ow20 doesn’t help. My BILs 6.2 GM (2018) failed. Started ticking, he ignored it until it was knocking. 142k miles. We pulled it apart and found it was lifter failure, but not the DOD lifter, just one of the normal ones. The needle bearings in the roller / cam follower end of the lifter has failed. Exact same problem the Hemi / Pentstars suffer from.

I had a lot of GMs over the years. The last couple I had engines issues. Not sure I would trust any of the GM engine series. They all have skeletons in the past or present . And with full march to EVs....

Slightly off topic, but the only engine that has failed in all the vehicles me and my wife have owned was her 2013 BMW X5. We bought it as a certified pre-owned from a BMW dealership with around 25K miles on it. We religiously had the same dealership do all the maintenance.

At 80K miles, the engine seized leaving my wife stranded on the side of the road. We had it towed to the dealership. They wanted $10K just to diagnose the problem (no extended warranty). Estimate for a new engine, if necessary, was around $30K. After months of battling with the dealership and BMW, we threw in the towel and accepted a $2800 check from the dealership, and we moved on.

My point is, no vehicle is immune to engine failures. We thought my wife's BMW would last for at least 150K miles without major problems. She loved that car, and it treated her well, right up until it didn't.
