Does anyone have experience with changing the dashboard on a first gen?

I've taken apart the lower dash by the pedals and stuff around the speedo numerous times, that is super easy, but nothing on the upper dash. I believe
@daveeasa and @Sunnier have experience with this though.

I haven’t done this yet. I managed to swap the passenger airbag by just removing the glove box. I’ve done some trim but never the full Monty. I may attempt the wheel at some point but unless I find a black or moon mist dash piece in nice condition, I’ll probably leave my gorilla glued one as is for a while.

Yup. Down to frame and back wall twice. But I don't have any step-by-step go-by. Tips:

First step, turn your steering wheel far to the side to expose the small Allen fasteners in the column. Do this before you disconnect the battery. You'll have to take the steering wheel off. (Borrow a puller free from Auto Zone, O'Reilly's, whichever is your local auto parts store).

Begin disassembly by manipulating the air vents in the stereo surround, inside are two fasteners, one each side. Once those are out, you'll be able to gently pull out the surround. Go slowly and pay attention... any time you feel resistance, stop and look for a fastener to remove.

I think I recall most of the actual weight fastening bolts are 8's (?) and there's only maybe 10 of them(?)

    BIGGEST TIP:
Place every fastener in one of the cup holders in your center console (or place a small box on each floorboard, same/same)... if you remove a fastener from driver's side of center, put it in that cup holder; passenger side, to that cup holder.

    DASH REASSEMBLY FOR DUMMIES:
Take photos of each step at disassembly. You'll learn as you go and, for anyone more "visual learner" than I am (99% population), you may not need the pics to remember how it all goes back together again. But if you are challenged in this kind of thinking... or you'll leave the dash disassembled for awhile and forget... pics are a huge help.

Anyway. I have no idea what your actual question might have been. Lol. I hope something I wrote is the answer. Good luck!

While this is a 2000, it's almost exactly the steps I have done with my 04 when removing certain sections. To date I have removed everything but the actual dash board, whereas this guy ends project by removing dash after removal of the other sections.

Every time I take out that kick panel under the steering wheel, I forget you have to pull the top section toward you instead of pulling down. I was playing around with it for 20 minutes last weekend trying to remember how to do it.

What are some reasons why the entire dash would have to be pulled in our trucks? Aside from the cab swap BMK is considering.

To grease those little phallic nubs that cause our dash to squeak like crazy in cold weather.

@Sunnier , why did you have to pull your dash out?

Because I determined the housing for the uber-silly drink holder that wouldn't really support a cup, was the perfect place for my comms radio base. But it's not accessible from the front. I got all the way down to the frame, and removed the big dash piece, to discover that a bolt mounted from the back forward is what held the thin metal box frame I sought. And also, that it wasn't actually perfect; the little box frame I wanted to put the radio base into needed some modification.

So I took that as a template, and my radio base, to Bruce, with a request that he fabricate a radio mount. He agreed to do it, but life happens at its own speed and weeks passed, and I putting the truck back together for a trail run I had previously committed to.

Very soon after that trail run, Bruce called to tell me my mount was ready. :angrygirl:

I do think it's the perfect place for a comms radio mount. Super secure when hucking or whooping. And that cup holder was super lame.

I want one of those mounts now.

using the whole width of ashtray and cupholders would be cool I think. Another option might be Oem small Toyota switch blank slots, lord knows we need them.

Idk if I'm reading this correctly or not.
You removed the whole dash to discover you only needed to remove a bolt from the back?
Or you had to removed the whole dash to get to the bolt in the back.
For context, planning what to do with that stupid cup holder drawer. Thinking about using that and the ashtray drawer as a base for some kind of modular face plate to mount accessories, etc.
