I just took my 2023 Platinum in for its first 5k service and requested to have the oil changed although it isn’t recommended till 10k. After getting home and looking at the itemized invoice, it stated they used 8 quarts of 0W-16 oil instead of 0W-20. With that being said, is my engine fine or should I go back and have them change it to 0W-20? I know many on here aren’t fond of dealership service and neither am I. Any advice would be great since I’m a first time truck owner. Thanks

Make them change it again with correct oil.

probably don't get many Tundras in for oil changes...unless you live in the Arctic Circle I'd go back ASAP.

well they gave it the college try and at least put fluid in it. Dealers just are not what they used to be for service. They are running around like rats jumping off a sinking ship trying to keep up. always a good idea to check over the invoice and vehicle before leaving the lot.

I called the service department this morning and was told ‘Toyota is going to change the spec to 0W-16 for better gas milage’……. Made no sense to me as to why they would do that without knowing how I use my truck. They did offer to change it back to 0W-20 though.

Yea, total BS. I’m taking it back to have it redone. Just trying to make it past the Toyota care and then I’ll do it myself.

I'm going to be a contrarian here and say that I don't think 0-w16 will make any difference. Also, based on experience, I would not believe anything the service writer or service manager told me. If you do take it back, watch to make sure they do actually drain that oil and put new 0-w20 oil in.

I don't know why that Benny Hill skit where the old man customer complains about the wine, the waiter slaps a new label on the same bottle and brings it back to the old man to try and he now approves, comes to mind.

Does anyone feel that 0w-20 or 5w-20 is a very light oil for a vehicle that has twin turbos and is used to tow?

Here is the thing my track car says to run 0w-20 and if you do that you cook your motor, extreme use! I would think it is the same with our Toyota motors.

Then they were supposed to have it drained dry, in anticipation of government-mandated ICE sale ban by 2035 or whatever year. "It's coming". EVs don't use engine oil, right?

Toyota 4 cylinders started using it in 2018 if I remember right. Definitely not the intentions for the tundra engine. But I doubt it makes much difference for 1 oil change unless you have a cross country towing trip planned, it's still a high quality synthetic oil.

I didn't realize that. We just bought a Grand highlander Hybrid Max but it uses 0w-20 just like the standard turbo engine.

Look on the bright side. We'll probably be able to just buy a little packet containing the additive package, mix it with 8 quarts of water and pour it in the engine. Easy peasy.....

At a bar in our 20"s. Dude at the table orders 3 tall Rum and Cokes. They arrive as shorts. Guy demand Talls, waitress comes back and dumps them in a tall glass......glass was full. Exact same amount in either glass LOL

Whatever this forum told me to do
in the last 10yrs...I've visited 2 Toyota dealerships.

They both used bulk 5w-30. it's damn cheap & it works just as good (or better).

you would never know the difference.

I'll say this...if you sent in a sample, of your "0w-16", to Blackstone it has a 95% chance of having the viscosity of a 30w....because it is.

    dealerships are not your friend.

    ever.

probably not even synthetic...service advisor at my 10k TC visit told me you shouldn't change out Toyota's break in oil before 10k...I had to bite my tongue from calling BS lol...

I don't think I'd give them another chance to screw up something as simple as an oil change.

I took my car back to have them correct it. Won’t know if they did in fact change it to the correct oil since I don’t have the time to hang around and they still have it for a couple of recalls they’re ’working through’. Not sure why it’s taking a few days to update the software for the transmission control computer and place a new load capacity sticker on. To those who reside in Washington, avoid Swickard at all cost. I took in another car for an oil change in the past and they charged me for ‘washer fluid’ for $8 regardless if it’s full. The service manager said it’s baked into the oil change service. If I wanted to have it removed, he said he would have to raise the cost of oil to offset it since oil was ‘undervalued’ at $9.95 a quart…

my response would be "ok, just set a gallon of ww fluid in the rear floorboard for me since I already paid for it, thank you"

There’s a dealer I’ll steer clear of for sure. Thx for the warning. Bunch of crap. I’m having good luck at Toyo of Olympia so far. Bad experience at Toyo of Tacoma when shopping for my truck. Shady dealer, huge markups and non-refundable deposit.

The dealer/service model feels as if it's been failing for some time now. Franchise greed and unchecked regulations on service quality has made everyone 2nd guess returning. I personally remember a time when dealership service was peak and "if you want it done right". Toyota, other brands as well, should oversee sales and service along with a set standard, QC, and customer service. Doubtful it will ever change though, I can't imagine the cost v. benefit.
