Desert Fun with the SR5 TRD Off-Road

Filmed this video in California a few weeks ago before heading out to Las Vegas to display my Tundra in the Predator Tires booth at the SEMA Show. I was stuck at the booth so I didn't get a chance to walk the show to check out all the latest and greatest in the automotive aftermarket world. Oh well...

Well done video, but I didn't see any terrain that couldn't have been navigated by a grocery getter with street tires.

 

We have a different type of narrow trail issue, which we've named "Nevada Pinstriping" The sagebrush are basically little wire brushes and get your paint a nice freshly sanded with 50 grit appearance.

 

Yup, we also have these lovely plants called cactus, yucca, and scrub oak brush. All of which will pinstripe your truck free of charge.

 

Great job on the video, I really enjoyed it! Awesome looking truck too! Where in the California desert was this done?

Ocotillos are nasty suckers too.

 

When the trails get rough and/or skinny, this is my preferred ride.

 

There were no vertical trails or any rock crawling in the area where get could shoot with our filming permit. The best location was the deep sand in the dry riverbed (timestamp 1:06 to 1:15). I doubt any grocery getter with street tires could get in and out of that area. Plus, we probably wouldn’t have tried some challenging trails with just 2 weeks away from SEMA Show risking damaging the truck and not having enough time for repairs.

I think next time we will use Jazz elevator music or maybe Lil Wayne to be a bit more upbeat.

 

Scrub oak might single handedly be responsible for the October business bump that detailers get from September hunters who venture out West.

 

Not true. I’m assuming you’ve never been on many trails in California, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, or done any big game hunting in the West and Mountain states in September and October…or you wouldn’t have said what you said.

I agree. I’ve had the JK and JL. They’re hard to beat on narrow trails.

 

Mine had a few pinstripes from wheeling in north Texas, but they’ve been buffed out…and why would I leave pinstripes on my truck?

 

Don’t forget you can get your rig off axis and next thing you know the side of your truck is against a boulder or the side of a narrow trail.

Hahaha. Your wife is funny. That’s exactly one of the reasons why people run big tires…to make everything, whether big or small, feel and look like cracks on sidewalks. I bet your wife will agree that size matters. What size tires do you have?

 

My last two Tacomas were Super White - pinstripes weren’t an issue with that paint.

awesome vid, well done. Red Cone, Mt Antero or Webster Pass here in CO are my favorites, you'd like them. Thought to post a pic of my 4R doing them, since you know....both your Tundra and my 4R V6's and all.

I had a silver Jeep JKU and pinstipes weren’t an issue also. I had a black 1998 4Runner and pinstripes were really bad and I quit buffing them out after the 2nd time going through brush in northern Arizona and southern Utah.

We have a couple factories in SE Asia. I would say the tread designs and quality are decent, not quite tier 1…pricing is a lot less than tier 1 brands.

 

I can’t say I’ve been to any of those trails, but I’ll check them out. The only times I’ve been off-road in Colorado are during archery elk season last few Septembers.
