Hey guys, I was going to purchase a 2021 double cab SR5 with the convenience package, upgraded audio, technology package or whatever it’s called, LED light upgrade, blacked out badges, 38 gallon fuel tank upgrade, TDRD Sport, blah blah blah. Seemed to be pretty kitted out. Anyway, dealer ended up being shady and I had to walk.

I just found a 2019 Limited with the TRD Off-road package. What’s the difference between this and the 2021 SR5 described above? Does the limited automaticity come with the 38 gallon tank or do I need to check to see if the 2019 has that? Are the 2019 limited headlights and fog lights the same as the upgraded 2021 LED package? I know the difference between the Sport and off-road but are there any differences between a 2019 and a 2021? Thanks!

Only change from 19 to 21 is the radio. 20+21 have the new head unit with android auto and apple car play.

It sucks with the factory unit so either way you're probably going to be inclined to upgrade to aftermarket if CarPlay is a deal breaker for you.

Oh wait does this mean that the 2019s don’t have the smart handles then? The keyless entry

Correct, key on driver side only, and the typical key fob to unlock the doors.

Depends on the trim level apparently there are 20 and 21 that still have a key, i know the platinum/1794 trim in 20 got the push button but unsure of which trims still have a key. That said yes no keyless entry on the 19 which is actually a good thing if you want a remote start because push button start models shut off when the door is opened where as the models with a key the engine will stay running.

I do have the VIN. I was thinking of taking it to toyota and seeing what they can tell me about the truck unless you know of where I could plug it in online

Wish I still had a key with an aftermarket remote start. Push button I find mildly inconvenient.

I’m stepping up to the tundra from a Tacoma because I have a kiddo now. Having the ability to leave the key in my pocket is a convenience. It’s not like it’s a dealbreaker or anything but I’d prefer it for when my hands are full

4y with my 2019 factory stereo setup, XM radio, even has CD player.

I don't get all the complaints it's in a truck that has more creaks, cracks and sounds than any other vehicle I've driven, plus it's a loud truck to begin. I'm not 20y old anymore and don't need the entire world to hear what I'm listening too.

If I want to listen to real music, in quality sounds I listen to vinyl at home.

I don't think it's so much the volume or even sound quality. Everyone wants their vehicle radio to be a giant cellphone with all their apps that they "need". I don't think it's necessary in a vehicle either, but look at it this way: if they didn't have their radios to play with, they'd be playing with their phone the whole time. Not that they don't do that anyway.

I actually prefer the radio to only have my "radio" type controls on it. But I'm funny that way.

So what year did they start doing the push button start feature in a Tundra?

20+21 got push button with higher trim levels. Definitely platinum/1794. Sounds as though the SR5 and lower still got the key. Unsure of the TRD trims but sure someone will chime in.

Check the build link in my signature.
20/21 SR5 with the tech/convenience packages got push button, so if you got TRD Offroad it depends on which specific package of TRD OR. That tech package also includes the auto-AC controls and I think the seat heaters.

this package also includes the telematics “upgrades” like the SOS button and other subscription services tied to it (remote start being one) and navigation in the head unit…

The Limited trims got push button too, as did TRD Pro (based off the limited) and of course the platinum and 1794.

Shark fin antenna replaces the one in the front fender and contains the cellular antenna as well for the telematics systems.

you will lose both CD player and AUX headphone jack input in the 20/21.

38 gallon tank will be in most anything 2019 as long as it isn’t base SR trim or SR5 without any added packages. Running a VIN through the Toyota owners site is the best way to be 100% sure.

It’s more about having GPS on the screen than the music quality for me. As long as I have Bluetooth for Spotify, I’m happy with music

IMHO keyless entry/push button is such an overrated feature. For the first year or so I did use the feature. Then we have a rash of thefts involving the key fob code signal to the actual truck. Basically they steal that code and drive off with the vehicle. I no longer use it and don’t miss it after 2 plus years.

I disable the key fob everywhere I go and use the clicker to unlock my truck (which restarts the key fob).

And having a key is just my preference.

Yea but like I said before, I can see the appeal now that I have a kiddo. It’s so much easier taking the wife’s palisade over my Tacoma when I have the baby because the key is just one less thing I need to fumble with while the baby is screaming his head off

Duly noted…I understand the screaming kid, have two myself. My worry is getting back a destroyed truck.

I have seen people’s life’s upended due to a stolen vehicle. It’s much easier when the vehicle never returns. But in my neck of the woods the cars are coming back in bad but not “totaled” condition. It’s terrible because the ONLY people rewarded are the criminals. It’s difficult to prove to an insurance company there is transmission damage if the vehicle still drives. The victim pays for a lifetime hence my strong opinions.

You stated you your wife Palisades, respectively please be diligent. Kia’s and Hyundai’s are being stolen at alarming rates (not only because of the key fob though).

Oh yea I totally get that too. I ride dirt bikes and have had multiple bikes stolen and recovered. I’ve also had court ordered restitution granted in my favor, only to see like $200 of it.

As far as the palisade goes, it’s a 2023. The older Kias and Hyundais could be stolen extremely easily using a USB cord due to how the switch was configured. It was a physical issue not a software issue. That being said, I have no idea if the newer keyless ones have an issue now too lol.
