Well I am sorry to that this will be my last tundra. Toyota, in their eminent wisdom, does not offer 4 down towing like Chevrolet Ford and Chrysler. Wtf.
I have a platinum tundra 4x4 and I love the vehicle. But I am getting a motor home and I will be towing a vehicle 4 down (dinghy towing). I am very disappointed in Toyota not offering this on their 4x4 the way the other US auto makers do.
Jeep has the easiest 4x4 for towing. Push the Neural button to disengage the transmission from transfer case. Vehicle already set up for dinghy towing. Same as the Ford 4x4..
They also dropped the option for adding a super charger to their motors. Shame on Toyota.
I would pay more if this was offered as an option.

Bye Rick! Good luck with your next vehicle purchase. Maybe you can go elk hunting when you get a decent truck and get rid of that piece of junk Tundra!

Nissan and Toyota do not have a neutral transfer case, so you will need a different vehicle, or dolly with the Remco kit (if that’s what it’s called).

Well if that’s what you want, go get
It but be careful. Not all of the fords or chevys do it either, only some of them. Make sure you get what you need.

I have decided on getting a Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk. It has all the features I am looking for and a push button Neutral for the Transfer case.

At least it will be easy to tow when it breaks down.

    Couldn't resist.

Nothing wrong with changing to a vehicle that better fits your needs...but you are the first I've heard of someone complaining about that on here.

I didn't know people bought Tundras to tow like that... Best thing to pull behind a coach is a Wrangler.

Hay guys. I am complaining on this forum because maybe just maybe the factory will read it and correct the problem. Fat chance though. Toyota is Way behind the times. Just saying

You will definitely have to tow the jeep to the shop that is....my boss has a new one that stays at the Dealership more than our work parking lot....not by choice...

Oh I would so reconsider that decision. I see these new(ish) GC on the side of the road quite often.

Why not get a good used TJ wrangler?

I have owned a 2018 Rubicon and have not had a problem in the year and a half I have owned and 15K miles, it's possible to get a lemon with any vehicle. I tow my Jeep with my motor home quite often. That being said, I would love it if my Tundra was toadable!!!

So a few years ago my Dad was shopping for a new vehicle to replace the Wrangler that he towed behind his RV. He wanted a midsize truck, and was looking at the Tacoma and the Colorado. He really wanted the Tacoma, but the fact that it is not flat towable meant he ended up with the Colorado.

Honestly, I don't think it's something Toyota needs to address. The market of people who pull vehicles behind RV's is quite small compared to the regular market, and Toyota sells as many trucks as it can build. I can't see it being on their list of priorities.

    That.

Also they do make a driveshaft disconnect to be able to flat tow. One on the rear driveshaft and you're ready to go.

That seems way easier than selling the Tundra and getting a Jeep.

Newbie question - why can’t you just put the transmission in neutral and flat tow it? I’ve done this up to maybe 30 miles on surface streets with a couple Tundra’s that had, let’s say, close encounters with water or other objects and were unable to drive.

or, why not unbolt the rear drive shaft from the third member and strap it up to the frame?

So, by merely putting the transmission in neutral and towing, you'll still be spinning the Output shaft of the transmission. The gears inside the transmission will all be spinning, without the benefit of the transmission fluid being pumped through to provide lubrication and cooling. It's okay to tow like this for short distances at low speed, but can cause catastrophic damage otherwise.

The 2nd option, disconnecting the driveshaft from the rear differential, is possible, but man, that's a major pain in the ass. You'd need to connect it then reconnect it every time you want to move the TOAD under its own power. That option, btw, is what heavy tow truck drivers do whenever they tow a broken down semi.

Thanks man! That makes sense. No cooling capacity would be destructive.
