I got a 16 TRD a couple of weeks ago and its supposed to have a 38 gallon tank. I live 30 miles from the Indian reservation in Salamanca NY. the gas is >.40 to>.45 cents a gallon cheaper there [no tax on the reservation]. Twice I drove up there to fill up with zero miles left on the DTE. When I fill up it only takes 30-31 gallons, is there that much of a "grace" on the DTE?

Yes. The "extra" is in there to keep the in-tank fuel pump submerged and keep it cool. At least that is what I have read....

Yes. I have the 26 gal tank and there is a 6 gal reserve from DTE. Gets you a bit further down the road and protects fuel pump from drying out which can damage it.

What I don't understand is why the truck was designed to haul an extra 8 gallons around all the time. I mean seriously 50# extra. It should be advertised as a 30 gallon tank with 8 gallons of cooling fluid.

when the low fuel light comes on, you have about 8 gallons left. depending on your mpg, you have about 125 miles left in the tank (regardless of what the display shows). I routinely drive an extra 25-50 miles after the low fuel light comes on and I usually add 32-35 gallons to the tank. the "distance to empty" display is just an estimation and it errs on the cautious side. if you calculate your mileage by hand, you will know exactly how far you can drive on your tank.

Dale Gribble has read on the innernet that the government has been working with the automobile manufacturers to install a hidden compartment in the bottom of fuel tanks. This compartment contains tracking devices that provide the authorities information about everywhere you go and is then shared with aliens.
Obviously this takes away from the amount of gas the tank can hold.

Don’t most our newer vehicles have EDR’s?

This topic has been beat to death. Doesn't anyone do any research on here before asking about something covered many, many times?

I am amazed at how many times I do a site search and come up dry even when I know the topic has been discussed.

I rarely ever get lower than a 1/4 tank. I've had my yellow warning light come on twice in 4 years since I've owned my truck. I always hand calculate mpgs when traveling long distances where gas stations are a bit hard to find and even then I don't care about that light coming on. I know how much gas is left.

You can frequently get better results with a google search even though the results will be from here on this forum.

The site search sucks imo. I have better luck googling my question then at the end either putting in ‘tundra’ or ‘tundra forum’
