Hi I have a 2023 tundra Trd sport and I recently put a 2.5in lift on it. Do I need extended cv axles to maintain proper travel and cv boot angle ?

I would be looking to buy some used take-off red axles from a TRD Off Road that upgraded to the factory 3” lift.
Seems silly that Toyota used black axles on non-TRD and Sport models when the only difference in height is .5”. Plenty of people running running 3” lift with the TRD reds, haven’t read about anyone’s experience lifting with blacks except yours.

Cool thanks for the info, would it be better to get the ones for a 3in Trd lift kit or are the stock trd off-road ones the same?

    Hello Nschmittsd,
I don’t know if you would be better off with the TRD 3” lift silver axles or the regular TRD reds. Seems like a pretty safe bet to go with the reds.

I have TRD sport too and will doing TRD OR red axles when I go for Dobinson IMS lift.

I was considering doing the TRD lift silver axles but I read/watching somewhere that the silver axles are actually too long and requires few other parts to make the silver axle works. I believe that's why the TRD lift kit comes with the knuckle lower ball joint attachment that are actually extended instead of a longer lower control arm. Also TRD kit also have tie rod extensions sleeve.

I just ordered a trd sport (Canadian) and want to level it on day 1 basically. I’m just learning of this BS. I was going to do a 1.75” to maintain a slight rake. Will this cause any issues with the stock axels? If so what’s the limit? 1.75” was always a mild level kit from any Toyota I’ve ever owned.

to clarify, you are referring to just the sport model? Or spacer lifts in general? I know the issues with flexing off road with spacer lifts, just wanting clarification on the sport model in particular

Having the TRD offroad suspension with the red axles should help.

I think a 1.75” level will not really make much difference. If you use a Wescott style lift, that could affect the ride offroad.

My front suspension will travel the same distance before the level, till it maxes out. Having the TRD lift shocks will certainly travel further because they are longer.

It also depends on what you want out of the truck. If it is a grocery getter or pavement princess, the levelling kit will give the truck a nice look!

I see the level as a cosmetic thing more than a functional upgrade. I am looking at lifts and planning which kit to go with. In the meantime, the level is a nice change to the stock rake.

it’ll be primarily an on road truck with the odd woods road but nothing crazy. I didn’t realize the 3rd Gen sports came 0.5” lower on the front than an off road.

just ensuring that under normal street driving and the odd fire road isn’t going to mess anything up with a mild 1.75” spacer lift regarding these different axles I’m learning about

Ya there are a lot of differences in the builds from trim to trim. It is really hard to know what these differences are and asking a sales rep isn’t going to help.

We got a TRD offroad package because of the cameras and the suspension. After finding out the differences, we are glad that we held out for the TRD and even more now. We have an RC levelling kit and for the most part it is good. No real difference in the ride and we don’t expect to do much rock crawling. Most of the logging roads around here wouldn’t be to challenging for our setup.

my main reason for the trd sport is the chrome delete. The 20” wheels on the sport look nicer as well. For my use I feel it’s the better of the 2 trims. Just want to level it when I get it. I don’t get Toyota lowering the front and not the rear?

I have a 2022 TRD sport with Westcott front preload only collar lift. Almost Leveled the front of truck to stock rear. Got about 2.25” lift on front. Stock measured 21” front. Currently sitting 23.25” with lift. Rear measured 23.5” Measuring front center hub to fender. Put 8000 miles of highway and bad PA roads with the level. No issue with axles so far. Plan to Dobinson 2/1 and get TRD off-road red axles in future.

I've been running a 2.5" lift for about 10k miles on the sport axles with no issues so far even after installing total chaos UCAs. I regularly take it through washed out and rutted dirt roads.

Yup same here , cause I got the TRD Sport because of the color match body trim and it was in stock , now I have to order Dobinson suspension and trd red axles , thanks Toyota . By the way I had the dealer put on a collar lift or whatever it’s called and it rides like garbage , it’s a shame, I feel like I ruined my new truck, I hope the Dobinson suspension will give me back a nice comfortable ride and takes the bumps much better. How I miss my 6112’s on my last tundra !!!

If your ride changes, ie gets stiffer, it’s likely a pre load spacer lift. A mild spacer lift on top of the coil assembly shouldn’t noticeably change the spring rate.

That’s exactly what I’m running a spacer lift, I’m thinking about getting the icon diff drop kit just to correct my cv Angles but they aren’t too bad.

I just can’t do it , not many people say the ride is basically the same as stock with a spacer lift, I tried it on my last truck and no good and now tried a collar pre load lift on this truck and even worse. I’m going with the Dobinson kit all around , got great reviews and reasonably priced

Leveling kits aren’t bad as long as your upper control arms aren’t maxed out limiting your Down travel. My stock an arms can still drop 2in or so before they begin to bind. Once they bind or if your leveling kit has them completely maxed out it will be a rough ride. You also you gotta keep in mind what you are planning to do with the truck, if it’s a street truck or take it down fire roads you will probably be ok. But If you plan on being hard on the truck and taking off-roading at a high rate of speed they can cause damage to your shocks because they will bottom out before your bump stops engage.

Your tuck looks great by the way , I got 2023 TRD sport in white , wheels and tires come Monday. once I see how the 34’s look on it, I will then determine how much height I really want for a lift and then go from there , but I’m pretty sure I will be installing the dobinson kit. This truck has to ride much smoother than it does now over bumps . It did when I initially test drove it before the spacer lift

This holds true for any lift. I had OME coils on my Tacoma and it was maxing out my down travel and on a pothole it would bottom out hard on the down travel.

I spoke to a reputable lift company by me, Im on Long Island NY and the truck is basically a pavement queen. The stock black axle shafts will be fine for 2.5 lift and below, they may wear a little quicker but not worth the extra money to buy the longer shafts unless you are doing a lot of off road which I’m not. The stock UCA’s are fine as well, a lot of people will buy stuff just to buy it or for piece of mind but just find a knowledgeable, Honest company and they won’t steer you wrong as long as your up front with ur vehicles intended usage and what your looking for out of it.

Because why would I want a 2” diameter shock when a 2.5” is available for the about the same price.
