I suppose it could be done. I had to have my rear main seal replaced in my '07 at 200k miles. I opted to pay a shop to have it done since it would be rather time intensive without a lift. Keep in mind you will have to pull the drive shaft, pull the transmission, and possibly remove exhaust system. Sucks the amount of labor involved to change a $20 seal.

That's right about what I paid. The dealership did give me a free loaner for the week though. Brand new TRD 4x4 Tacoma.

I'm not saying it's not doable. I contemplated doing it myself, but I came to the conclusion that there was no way I could do it in a weekend's time and I didn't have a spare vehicle to use while my truck was in pieces. In the end, my time was worth more than the money it cost to fix it.

how long do you plan on keeping the truck?
I would look at.. the cost vs benefit.

you can buy a heck of a lot of oil for 1500

Well the price of a new trucks 40000
( whice I'm not a fan of the new trucks) I feel the quality of the truck went down with the new years.
I might just see how many miles I can put on my 11. I'm still throwing options around on what I can or should do.
