As a kind of companion question about carrying a road atlas, do most of you still carry and use cash for purchases? My son thinks I'm crazy for not putting everything on a charge card with rewards. Say's carrying cash is for dinosaurs. I told him that CASH is still king in my book and that I don't use my charge card unless it's absolutely necessary. I paid cash for all my Christmas gifts so no charge card bills coming in January.

Nothing wrong w/this philosophy at all

Most CC 'rewards' are BS, but to answer your main question... yes, I always have cash on me; mainly because you just never know what the day will bring and push comes to shove it can get you out of situations in a hurry!!

Cash is the peasants coupons it seems these days. People seem inconvenienced by it. Then you park in a garage somewhere and uponce exiting find out they only take cash. Cretans.

Just like a lady told me one time after I had gave her my pocket knife to cut something, "a gentleman always carries a pocket knife," while she gave her husband a dirty look. LOL.

Yes. For transactions that only require the payee and myself being in the “need to know” category.
groceries, dinners, gas stations can go on a debit or credit card. Sometimes it’s helpful to have a paper trail. Sometimes it isn’t.

Business expenses run through credit card that is paid off monthly. Number and size of transactions allow rewards to be actualized.

I don’t fly anymore and take a train (like a proper member of civilized society) so the TSA doesn’t have a collection of my pocket knives.

    Oh Fo Sho.

For many reasons. One of the greatest of which is these stupid credit card screens at walk up eateries where, if you use a card, they spin the screen around and ask you "please complete the transaction" as the screen asks you in HUGE letter if your tip will be 20%, 25% or 30%. Kiss my grits. Cash. No screen turn. I'm in total control. Oh. And if change needs to be counted back its fun to watch some of the attendants struggle with the most basic of mathematical functions.

99.9% non cash transactions with exceptions. Gotta have some cash on hand though. I also carry a few Goldbacks when I go to Wyoming, South Dakota, or over to Utah. They're also good in Nevada and New Hampshire and counting.

Only for tips at car washes and such, otherwise I'm too much of a sucker for Cash Back credit cards, I get about $2500 per year, you know for cash in the pocket...

While I don't carry much I always try to have about $40 in my wallet. Just like the option to use cash if needed.

I used to be the bank for my wife and kids. I never USED cash, but it kept disappearing from my wallet. When my wife and I started frequenting estate sales, I started carrying more cash because they always charge extra for credit cards. Now more companies are charging for credit cards so I keep cash available for those. But I haven't paid for airline tickets to go skiing in a few years because I put everything else on my travel credit card, paying it off every month.

Whatever this forum told me to do
CC's are quite the paradigm now.

See, I want to buy something from someone. but...this 3rd party gets a 3% vig on OUR transaction.

awful, because it is not MORE convenient than cash. but they program you to believe just that.
and CC's get ALL the transactional detail & history. and sell/use it. and you gave it to them for FREE.

and cash-back is just another way to program you to give up cash.

    cash = autonomy

I carry an emergency $100 or $200, otherwise no and never use it. Though I do keep a few thousand stored away at home as physical backup.

I was surprised that some places do not accept cash. Sometimes I use my cards, sometimes cash.

But when it comes to payment for something I’m selling, I always want cash.

Cash back, travel rewards, ford visa with points for service and accessories.

I have used zero percent cards to keep my savings intact through multiple large purchases. Probably gonna open one for my wife's 50th birthday if there are any next year and break that up into a few months.

Cash isn't king, using other peoples' money smartly is king. If I get around to it in a pay period or need cash I take out 100 or 150 bucks but that's it. And I've been known to go through a pay period with an empty wallet.

Always carry cash and use it a lot, especially when dining out with larger groups where everyone has separate checks. When not using cash I use the phone to pay whenever possible, especially at gas stations.

I always have "emergency cash" in my wallet. You never know when you'll need it and/ or when technology fails you (I.E. no ATM close by and/ or debit/ credit machine not working). When traveling internationally, I often use cash, either cold, hard USD or local currency.

Cash is still king when it comes to negotiations.

A guy wants to do….Pick something…(work on your Tundra, Fall clean up, snow removal). He says $350. You say how about $300 cash?

    Saves you money.

I use both, not because it's more convenient, but because when I was younger, if I had cash, I'd spend it. LOL

I do keep a few thousand @ home, and I carry a few hundred on me for emergencies as well.

Always have about a hundred bucks on me in mixed bills. Amazing how a lot of problems are easily fixed with a little cash. Plus I'm less likely to spend it if I can actually SEE the money leave my hand.

TSA is a joke...I can fly with my sidearm but they won't let me on with a basic pocket knife, even with the gun on my hip.

I use my CC for most transactions because of the rewards 'kickback'. I always carry cash. There are still times where a CC is not accepted, but more importantly, there are times when I do not want a permanent record of every transaction. For example, I never use my CC in a bar. Also, for security reasons, I can't believe how readily people hand their card to a bartender and let him stick it in a cup behind the bar, or worse, somewhere out of the owner's sight, while they drink.

How are most CC rewards BS?
I pay my balance in full, weekly, so no interest paid, and collect enough rewards to buy most of the Christmas presents for my kids each year. CC rewards certainly work for me!
