Like when someone cuts you off and the system slows you down quickly or even brakes. I am going to assume it does because otherwise some drivers behind us not running similar might get caught out and rear end us.

While driving on the interstate, particularly while towing, we always get irritated when someone cuts us off then immediately brakes but perhaps this is the real reason? Maybe they are using cruise and the cruise control lights up the brakes? I am less bothered if they are far enough ahead that I can just cancel cruise control and allow my truck to slow without slamming on the brakes.

I was always taught to let off the gas to slow down and only use brakes on the interstate when you had an issue. Also impolite to merge over and force the guy behind you to have to brake to avoid hitting you. Seems like a stupid design if the radar cruise could instead just allow the engine to slow down vs activating brakes.

I don't have a 3rd Gen, but I have the radar cruise control on my 20 Tundra. It's reads the traffic well, and it's gentle in seeing the slowing traffic and gently backing off on the power to maintain distance (just like you should do instead of cramming on the brakes). I have never felt it apply the brakes. All bets are off, however, if you get a brake checking moron in front of you if you're not paying attention. In that case, the pre-collision braking will happen.

I didn't think I would like the adaptive cruise control, but I do. It works well.

The adaptive cruise control does not relieve you of the duties of actually driving your truck. You still need to be on top of what's going on with traffic.

There are 3 set points for the sensitivity. Your set point doesn't matter. It's colliding with the car in front of you that does, and the adaptive cruise control tries to help you. It doesn't warn you that the truck is slowing down because it's assumed that you are actually paying attention to your speed.

It's just an aid, and you still need to drive.

I have had the precollision system activate three times. Once when a deer jumped right in front of me and twice on the interstate when someone cut me off. I was thankful with the deer and personally would not have applied the brakes as quickly the other two times because the other cars were driving fast enough that they soon pulled ahead.

I have had the thought that this could cause someone to tag me from behind. In the end we are responsible to not hit the vehicle in front of us. If we do we pay the bill. End of discussion. So if someone hits us from behind they were likely not paying attention or following too close. So I stopped thinking and worrying about and welcome the help and reduced financial risk of me hitting something.
