I read that if the 5th letter of your vin is a Y that means it’s a non flex fuel truck. But my gas cap says it takes that e85 crap? I’m trying to decide if I want to trade it for another because at 30k miles, I’m hearing what sounds like pinging when it’s under load at low RPM’s and some whistle sound when you coast around 2k RPM’s.

Mine is a flex and the 5th "letter" is a W.

I believe the best way to know is to look under the hood at the stickers that identify the engine. 3UR-FE is regular gasoline, 3UR-FBE is flex fuel.

This checks out for me. Also W for 5th of VIN.

I always go to the website, login and go to the vehicle specs section. There you can input a VIN and it will give you the details of that vehicle.

Here is a random VIN I got off Autotrader that is a Flex fuel truck.

Oh mine doesn’t say flex fuel then. I wonder why the gas cap says it is then? And now I wonder if something is wrong with it because of those noises that other 2020’s don’t make

Flex fuel engines were discontinued along with the smaller V8 after the 2019 model year. There shouldn't be any 2020+ with flex fuel.

Well I evidently went to a dumbass dealer but my gas cap also says it takes the e85 garbage so I don’t know what the deal is with that

My guess would be that the cap was replaced, or just a mix up.

Or maybe after 2019 they all can use E85?

Toyota writes it in the owner's manual under "8-1. Specifications" that slight knocking under acceleration is normal. My truck is extremely quiet so I notice a lot of engine noise and what sounds like light pinging at low RPM under load, I think a lot of it is just intake noise.

This sounds like the most realistic thing that happened.

OP, just take a sharpie and cross out the E85 part on your gas cap, drink a beer and enjoy the rest of your day
