So I have a 2023 limited with TRD Off-Road package, which comes with the 14in infotainment display, but not the JBL upgraded audio. When I give the truck any throttle I hear a decent amount of rumble in the cab that I do not hear outside the vehicle. I assumed this was the fake engine noise everyone talks about. I purchased the carista obd2 dongle and hooked up it all up and went to customize, there are a tons of options listed, but nothing regarding engine noise, in fact there isn't even a "Chassis and Engine" section listed. I was able to successfully disable all the seatbelt dings, and enable the window rolldown with fob long press.

Is this a Carista problem, or does my truck not have that feature at all?

I think the fake engine noise comes with the premium JBL audio system. If you don't have that, you don't have the fake engine noise.

I was under the impression it was the limited and above trims. Interesting. I did not have it in my sr5, but had it on my platinum. It was the first thing that had to go. It was like listing to a twin engine boat that was not synced.

Looked at some youtube videos and apparently only the dealer can do it with there scan tool through the OBD11 connection.

The dealership tech can hook up their scan tool to the OBD II port. Then, going into the settings, they will find the following: Active noise control > utility > customize > others > ANC/ESE.

Turning off both ANC/ESE will remove the fake exhaust note.”

Update found a video where you can do it with the Carista app.

After watching the video , i will keep the growl noise . Carista tool is a very basic tool but im sick and tired of monthly fees. Rather just buy the d7 diagnostic tool instead .

yeah but you only need to have an active subscription to make changes to the settings. once you cancel the subscription, the settings are still the way you left them. Plus you get a free month subscription when you buy their obd2 dongle.

Yeah I tried Carista but it doesn’t have the option listed for my truck.

I have a 2023 Limited with the JBL upgraded sound system, so it came with the fake engine noise. I already had the Carista OBII device from my previous vehicle. I hooked it up, bluetoothed to my phone, and was able to play with all the settings. I turned off the fake engine noise (there's a noticable difference and I actually didn't mind the fake noise), changed the turn signal settings from "3-blinks" to 4 (you have a selection of about 2 - 8 ish), and finally I enabled the feature where you can roll down all windows from your key fob. You just press the unlock button 3 times and hold, then it rolls down all windows. Great for walking to your car on a hot sunny day. There's a bunch of other things you can change too regarding lighting (exterior and interior), chimes, etc.

Can Carista or the dealer adjust the fake engine sound to be lower? I'm on the fence whether I want it or not, but if it could be turned to maybe half volume I'd keep it. Just asking.

No way to "reduce" the volume that I know of - can only turn it on or off. I wanted the same thing, to reduce it. I'll likely leave my turned off, it doesn't sound terrible, just quieter.

I can't speak for the Limited trim, but for what it's worth, there is zero rumble noise in my Plat. with that stupid fake sound turned off. I'd assume it should be the same for your trim.

    ya this

went I tested the platinum that fake noise really seemed out of place, its didnt even really match up with the tach.

its going off ASAP when I get mine and Ill roll with the silence.

having owned V8s with borlas , it sounded stupid anyway as far as V8 throat goes

You only need to turn off ESE (Engine Sound Enhancement) to get rid of the fake engine noise. You should actually leave ANC (Active Noise Cancellation) on as it helps keeps the cabin quieter.

If there is a big plastic JBL module that under your driver’s seat, you have the upgraded JBL system with the engine sound enhancement. If there isn’t anything there, you don’t have ESE and that’s why you can’t find anything in Carista.

I can’t figure it out. It sounded so fake. The dealer had not ever turned one off when I asked them to but they were able to figure it out.

So, I traded my 23 Limited in on a 23 Capstone this week. The Limited had the 14" screen, but no JBL option. I did not have the Enhanced Sound option in the Carista app. On the Capstone, JBL is standard and with Carista it now has the option to turn it off. JBL is apparently the system that provides the v8 growl. Yes, turned that off on mine as well :)

How much does Toyota charge to add the sound of mud tires to augmented v8 sound from the radio??
