It might be. Lower end guitars are hit or miss because of QC issues. Wet wood manufactured overseas, then shipped to the US tends to shrink in the process, so as long as it didn't warp and something wasn't manufactured wildly out of spec, it should be fine after a "set up" from an experienced luthier. It will most likely need the action set and some fret work to get rid of sharp ends and un-level frets that would affect comfort and playability.

FYI, the guitar on top cost me 3k, was made in the USA, and still needed a bit of work when I took delivery of it.

Personally - I’d find a local music store and let them try a few in their price range/discuss musical taste and have someone guide you.

Online is great for some things/but this ain’t one of them. Like anything - you can certainly find a great guitar on the lower end - but something improperly set up or poorly made is going to make things way more challenging and un- enjoyable.

Epiphone is generally decent quality in the $300-500 price range used, Squire Classics are nice and even a little cheaper than that - otherwise your stepping up to a made in Mexico Fender which is $399-500. Finally PRS SE’s are a little pricier at $600-900 - but nice instruments for the money.

Keep in mind you’ll need more than a guitar - need an amp too - there’s $100-300 for a solid state model. Then there are effects pedals - a couple of starters are probably $35-50 each. The guitar and amp to start is fine - but you’ll find that they will want more as they learn which is why I recommend a good shop locally.

Oh - and you’ll quickly find it’s addicting. You chase a certain tone and you’re buying a different style guitar or a different amp. Before long you’ve got 5 or 6 of each and are constantly trading gear around looking for that elusive tone. G/L
