I searched the forum to see if this had been posted before, but didn't find it so here's an easy fix that I came up with...

The door sill trim pieces on all four doors of my DC were loose and would get kicked out of place and rattled. I pulled up the pieces to find that the tabs/ears were broken off of most of the mounting points... like this:
    IMG-0239.jpg

The fix is to use the license plate type inserts in the existing holes. You'll need 14 to do the whole DC (4 for each front door sill and 3 for each back door... maybe less for AC?) and they can be ordered as "1/4 (#14) License Plate Nuts", such as from Amazon here:
    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08R2WC6BK
    IMG-0242.jpg

You'll need to trim each mounting post down slightly to allow for the thickness of the insert. I trimmed each one down so that it was flush with the support webbing. I used a cutter (pictured), but the plastic is soft so you could probably just use a razor knife and work it by hand. Here is the before:
    IMG-0240.jpg

    And after:
    IMG-0241.jpg

Now insert your nylon nuts into the mounting holes. There are four on each front door and three on each back door:
    IMG-0243.jpg IMG-0244.jpg

They can be adjusted left/right slightly, so I started at the mating side to make sure it was nice and tight against the kick panel trim, and worked towards the back of the truck from there:

Nice and snug and secure! Hope this helps someone and saves having to buy new trim pieces!

Three+ years later and they’re still as secure as when installed.

Good to hear. I just wanted to double check before I cut off that plastic on the door jamb. Already have enough ordered for all of the door jams, even though the ones on the back are still mostly OK

Great thinking and great solution. Better than the original design

It is better than from the factory, IMO

it's like using the stud in a wall versus using a sheet rock anchor

I also think it should be added those plastic "license plate nuts" are useful for a number of body panels/ random tid bits on our trucks.

Definitely, I need to figure out some keywords to include with the link to drop it in there. “Door plastic sill plate fix”?

Definitely and I absolutely plan to figure out a way to improve our license plate plastics to use those damn things for my license plate. I intend to work on it after the holidays. Got some good ideas, just need to get my jumper plastics off and take some measurements to figure out which square punch to use to expand the holes. I think the pre-existing holes will make the perfect guide for a square punch.

While you have the screws out, a little spray paint on the screw head will spiff it up nicely. Usually they are pretty cruddy. Take a cardboard box and stick the screws in the cardboard so they stand up. Then hit with spray paint. Original was a shade of black, or you can color match to the plastic trim.

100%. Screws are ugly as sin, all oxidized. They almost look white, lol! I’ll be spray painting them for sure. Really enjoying the process of restoring the old girl. Bought her new in 2000, 25 years!
