Anyone have a whistling noise coming from their drivers side/door mirror?

I only hear it when my driver side window is down, but it's annoying. I know it's the mirror because if I fold the mirror in or put my hand in front of the black plastic casing, it stops.

There have been numerous comments regarding this, so it appears to be a fairly common frustration. The source is the gap in the mirror housing that allows the mirror to fold. Several solutions have been offered, ranging from black electrical tape to black silicon RTV material to fill the gap. Anecdotally, these seem to eliminate the whistling. Personally I have not experienced it and prefer to keep my folding mirror capability.

Makes you wonder how they didn't catch this when testing the vehicle. I'm sure a slight modification in the plastic mold would have resolved the issue.

I'm using electrical tape, which stops the whistle, but really...$50k new vehicle and I'm already at the "duct tape" stage!

The dealership here in Boerne, Texas, was solid. They changed the driver's side mirror, and the crazy loud whistle disappeared like magic. They told me that during assembly, the gasket in the mirror was not seated flush against the door frame.

Finally, after 2 years we have a possible reasonable explanation to this issue that many had.

Just wanted to comment here as well. Just purchased my 2024 SR5 TRD Sport and I also have, what I believe, is whistling somewhere along the side mirror on drivers side. I've tried taping it up but can't seem to find out where it is yet. I've only got close to 500 miles so far but at my first maintenance schedule with the dealership I'm going to have them look into it.

Any recommendations on what I should tell them from what everyone has noticed so far with this isolated issue?

@SATTX did they change out just the driver side mirror assembly and that fixed it for you? I've got the package on my truck where the side mirrors are color matched to the body. Don't know if that has anything to do with it though.

Thought it would reply back here with my findings. I was having the whistling noise in my driver side mirror for weeks now since I got the truck.

Mine would happen when I got up to 70mph+ and it would go away if I folded the mirror in. I tried taping up all the larger seems and tried putting something in the void where the mirror rotates when closed but no luck for any of that.

Finally came across a post from another member in another thread and he was saying his came from the leading seam/gap from that bottom cover of the mirror.

I didn’t ever try taping that up but tried after talking with him and it temporarily stopped the noise! I decided to do a bit more of a permanent fix and put a small bead of sealant on just that leading seem.

I used some clear sealant I had laying around from another house project. After I applied it, I had to wipe off the excess that inevitably got on other parts of the mirror other than the gap. After I did that, you couldn’t even tell anything had happened AND most importantly the whistle was GONE.

I recommend this to anyone having the same whistling as me. I never considered this spot originally. I think this is the cover for the wire and camera access to those that have the side camera package. Here is the small gap circled that I am referring to.

Thanks for this. Just looked at mine and noticed a small hole on the bottom right of the picture included. You guys have that?

I believe that’s a drain hole for any condensation or water that gets in that cover region. I thought my whistle was coming from that originally when I did all the taping but it wasn’t.

did you use sealant all the way around or just the front part? And what kind of sealant did you happen to use ?

just the front straight seam. That’s the part I tested with tape and the whistle went away. Thought it would be best to leave the rest untouched.

I used this Lexel clear sealant.

    upload_2024-8-14_17-31-1.jpg

I had that from a gutter sealing project I worked on at the house. Worked on the gutters and still there for years now so thought it would be great here!

Best part is you can’t see anything different. It took a little bit to get the excess off but I used goof off for what was on the surfaces and the rest went into that front seam.

    You beautiful bastard you!
I've spent tons of time and money trying to stop the whistling. Bought some new after market tow mirrors (They whistled worse and at a slightly lower pitch). I taped nearly every gap on these fucking mirrors trying to shut it up.
I was literally shopping around to replace the whole truck it was driving me crazy enough. But I saw your post and thought "that gap can't be big enough, but fuck it, I'll give it a go."
Sure enough some clear packing tape on just that gap alone made it go away. So I'm ordering that sealant you posted a pic of since you said it's basically invisible.

    Thanks man.

    Unrelated
While shopping around for other trucks that are 2022 or newer. The Tundra just looks the best of all of em. The Tacoma looks weird, like a squished Tundra. The Silverado looks like they aimed it to appeal to 50+ year old men so I'm not into it. (Maybe an all blacked out one I saw looked alright) And the Ford just looks exactly like it has for decades to me. The Ram just isn't even on the table too many electronic issues and known failures.

I'm pretty much into the Tundra or maybe a Land Cruiser but the later is a bit more than what I want to spend.

Took the mirrors off to do it.
Had the misses do it with a small syringe since she has a more steady hand then me. Decided to do the whole panel. Figured it wouldn't hurt.
Letting it cure a little before I go test it out. I'm hopeful.

HAHA! I started with the dealership trying to get them to replicate it and fix under warranty. Some mentioned it was a bent back gasket inside the mirror assembly. I didn't want to take it apart and wanted them to find it. But of course... they said they didn't hear any whistling after a test drive... That may still be the root of the problem but I didn't want to go there quite yet. That's when I found the one post of another member doing this and decided it couldn't hurt and I'm so glad I did. Glad it worked for you too!

My dealer replaced all my door and window seals saying that's what was whistling even after I told them I heard it with the window down. So I was done with them.

I was at dealership today and there is now an official “service bulletin” and fix for the mirror whistle(thru Toyota). They ordered up the kit to install and fix. Thanks gaud!

Did they have to order the kit for the fix or was it in their stock? I’m going to request this when I take mine to my dealer next.

So I also had the mirror whistle noise on anything past 45mph from day 1 of getting the vehicle. I tried every remedy i could before taking it to the dealership from tape to stuffing foam in the seams. The tape worked as i could pin point where it was coming from but I don't think i should have to drive with tape on my mirror on a brand new truck. Finally was able to take it in and drive around with a technician in the vehicle and explained/showed them exactly where the whistle was coming from. Mine was from the seam where the mirror folds. I showed them while driving that if i stuck my hand out the window and covered the seam of the mirror the noise would go away. Same if there was tape covering the entire seam.

After test ride with the tech, they replaced mirror assembly and problem solved. NO MORE MIRROR WHISTLE. I'm happy now

Anytime you have a "noise" issue its always best to do a drive with the tech in the vehicle with you so both of you hear and understand the problem. If not, you will get the dreaded "we couldn't replicate the noise" BS

What do you mean they replaced the mirror assembly. Can you photograph what part you mean…
