    Hi everyone,

My tundra has some pretty bad corrosion on the rear drum backing plates:

Has anyone else run into this problem? OEM parts are rather hard to find and expensive from what I’ve seen.

I don't usually say this, but that's worse than mine.

I had a different issue on the sequoia with the wheel bearing and it's a $200 part plus labor so I bought a rear axle from a junkyard for $100, been going for 20,000 miles with no problem. It's not the full rear axle and diff, just the axle that slides into the diff.

You'll have to pull the axle to replace them, then press out the studs. It wouldn't be hard, but if you can't find just the plates you may have to get axles.

I bought all the parts for the V6, backing plates, brakes, parking brake, bearings, seals, and all. Had a local mom/pop shop do the install. Charged me about $450. Well worth the money to me.

I know you posted recently that your diff cover was rusted and needed replacement and now your backing plates are rusted too. At what point does it make sense to just find a whole used replacement axle and start fresh? That or just buy a new replacement "bare" axle and swap over internals and replace wheel bearings and backing plates. Definitely the pricier way to go about it but would give you a fresh start.

Does the backing plate come off without removing the bearing and ABS ring?

I'm pretty sure you have to unpress everything.

And that's exactly where I ended up. After getting the plates (which were bent to hell as they just put shipping labels on them) and having to return them - I just replaced the whole axle with one from an AZ truck. Set of U-bolts, rear brakes, and some fluid was way cheaper and easier than dealing with the rusty plates and leaky housing.
