Easy down tailgate

I just purchased a 2024 tundra sr5 I went to pick up my daughter and when she approached the truck I saw that she was carrying a basket of clothes so I reached for my key fob to activate the easy down tailgate button (my truck was running)and it wouldn’t work .WHY!!! After several experiments I found that the tailgate wouldn’t work with the truck running and In park which doesn’t make sense to me.Why isn’t there a button on the dash somewhere and how do I override this problem to allow me to activate the tailgate with my truck running. Any suggestions??

 

Does it not have the tail light button?

Where you in the can trying to hit the fob button? My guess it’s a safety thing so the gate doesn’t come down when you don’t want it too, but I’m speculating on that

 

No tail light button I believe it’s on the next model up - I understand the safety issue but sitting with the vehicle running and in park should not stop me from opening it.

 

Others were complaining it did work and gate came open from the fob, maybe they corrected that and this is the result?

So for some reason Toyota did not include a tail gate release button inside the truck on any of the tundra models. There is a member working on a mod to put one inside. Sad part is the new Tacoma has one

 

If only the drivers door is unlocked the tailgate cannot be opened, you have to do a full unlock in order to open the tailgate.

 

I think they called up the corporate lawyers and had them design the logic for the tailgate. They don't want it to open while you are driving and have your load spill out onto the highway. So you get these annoying routines with the fob and road side button on the tail light. All the doors have to be unlocked as well!

Then the Tacoma comes along and you get 2 tail light buttons and an interior switch! Different lawyers? At least the tailgate in the new Taco comes with a lock.

My guess is that the Tundra lawyers went to VW to work on the ID.4. That one will open the doors while driving and going around corners! Or when you park it and then come back a bit later to find the hatch wide open

 

I don't think you have to have the doors unlocked.

if I have the fob in my pocket and the truck is locked and I walk up to the taillight switch and hit it, it unlocks the truck and opens teh tailgate.

 

All the doors including the tailgate have proximity sensors. Also Tacoma has auto down and up tailgate

Hmmm…I just backed up to my barn to unload some horse feed. Engine running, trans in park, FOB in center console, hit the taillight button, and the tailgate opened right up.

 

Not all models, I know the limited does, but not sure which others do/don't.

 

With the engine running in Park, key fob in the truck, my tailgate will not drop if only the drivers door is unlocked, but if I do a full unlock then I can drop the tailgate using the button on the side, or the tailgate handle. I have not tried to drop the tailgate from the fob, but don't see any reason why it would not work if everything is unlocked.

 

Read my post again, dude. Backed truck up to barn, put it in park, hopped out leaving FOB in truck, hit the tailight button, tailgate opened, and I unloaded the horse feed. Copy?

 

No Toyota key fobs function when the vehicle is running. Doors won’t lock or unlock. Tailgates don’t open. It’s standard operating procedure. It would be nice to have a button in the cab but I assume since you can’t close it too they figure you have to get out at some point anyway.

 

But yet I saw where the new Tacoma has a button for tailgate, although I'm not sure which trim level as it could be the higher trims with power up&down tailgate.

 

I need to try that which will be easy since I have my Tundra set to unlock all with 1 press. After having aftermarket systems since the 1980s that unlock all doors with one press I could never adapt to the 2 press thing.

 

Anybody know what ever became of the mod to put a tailgate button inside the cab?

 

In considering the locking and unlocking operation, is the tailgate considered as a door? Would "all doors unlocked" be needed to open the tailgate with the truck running?
