A question for all you electrical experts or electricians on here. I am building our house myself and doing a lot of the work myself.

I have underground power, so power will be coming underground from a transformer. I have a total of about 120 feet to get from transformer to where the meter and line will be coming into the house. I am doing 225 amp main panel in garage, 100-amp sub-panel in basement.

    1. With the distance of 120+ feet to get power in, what size service wire would support the 225 amp panel and sub-panel?

    2. Can I set a temp power pole about 10 feet short of the permanent meter, then leave the extra 10-15 feet curled up in a box or protected some way underground?

I have an electrician doing inside, but I agreed to be the one to get power in when it comes time to keep price down and use my Kubota backhoe, haha.

When I did residential work the outfit I was with and most others I knew of always used 4/0, 4/0, 2/0 aluminum URD cable for 200 or 225 amp services. It's rated up to 240 in conduit or 3 something direct burried. PUT IT IN CONDUIT.
If a rock nicks the insulation down to the conductor, and it happens often, the wire will eventually burn up. And if for any reason you ever need to replace the wire you don't have to dig a ditch.

For the temp service, I wouldn't use your feeder cable to power it. Drop some 2-2-4 URD in the ditch beside your conduit and cut it below ground when done.

Of course call your utility company to see what they'll allow first though. Some are picky

    100% this ^^^^

Definitely do the conduit. Landscaping damages direct bury service lines all the time. Sometimes it takes a short period of time and others it takes a while.
