Engine concerns buying a 2024?

Hi I'm brand new to this group..I'm in the market for a new truck. I currently own an 2010 Fj cruiser that is great but I need a bigger truck to pull my boat . I'm considering a 2024 Tundra or Chevy silverado RST. The engine troubles with the Tundras in the last few years really made me start looking at Chevy.. are the 2024 Tundras having the same issues?

No issues with my '23 and no engine recall - just driving it and enjoying ever mile. Buy a '25 if you are worried about '24. I would not have any hesitation on either. It will pull your boat easily. Still your money so your call. IMO Toyota still better than GMC/Chevy all day long.

Be odd to swap out from a toyota if its always treated you well, IMO

You'll be much happier with the Toyota, especially in the long run. I haven't heard of any issues with later 24's & 25's. Good luck on your decision.

Each of us has our own bias.

As someone who loves my Tundra and owns 4 Toyota body-on-frames currently (and if I had to buy a new pickup today), it would be a GM with the 3.0L Duramax, or 6.6L Duramax. I know a lot of people with those two engines and all seem happy with them.

But I despise GM, don't trust Ford, and don't know enough about Stellantis. So I'd go look for a 2021 or earlier Tundra.

I think there are concerns with every make in '24. Plenty of recalls for all. How bad are they? Will manufacturer stand behind? No way to know. My criteria went beyond engines, but I agree it is a factor.

Here you go. Make your own informed decision after watching these in detail. I'd get 2025, or wait for 2026 to be sure if no more engine issues and it'll have a refresh

I just bought a 2025 last week. I have very little time with it, but that miles that I have put on the truck have been quiet, comfortable and trouble free. I went through the pre-buy inspection checklist (stuck on the top in this area of the forum) and have found no issues related to that guidance. It is dead quiet on the highway.

Just one data point for you and again, still in the new car smell phase of ownership. At this point, go with a '25, they are running incentives on those anyway.

I've had Superduties for the last 22 years. I love Fords, & my son works at the factory as well. But after all of the nonsense & countless recalls, diesel emissions etc. I'm done. Went with Tundra and extended warranty just for piece of mind. Nice to drive a truck & not have to carry a code scanner.

They updated some components related to the engine in January 2024. I wouldn't be concerned. However, if you're comparing a 2024 to a 2025 because of the potential engine improvements...considering the significantly better deal you can get in a '24, buy that with an extended warranty and still walk away with money in your pocket compared to the '25.

    2024 PRO.

Within 3 months of ownership, cameras stop showing lines and other view angles, alignment was off from the factory. Dealership had to rework some software magic to get all my camera viewing angles back with lines (they said another PRO came in with the same issue last month with camera issues), and also got a realignment done.

I own a 2022 4runner and the only thing the thing has needed is oil changes and still running strong as my secondary vehicle.

I'm just waiting for my seat pan to break now or some rattling noises next as I read deeper into the forum. I have zero confidence in this truck (i'm scared to take it onto a long road trip and have some electric hybrid problem pop up as some people have experienced this).

I needed a new truck for work so I lacked choices at the time. If i had the luxury of time, i'd likely wait it out a little bit more to be honest. Just my 2 cents. I think i got spoiled by my 4runner.

Although I have my grievances of the tundra, I'd never consider a Chevy. I'd still buy my 2024 over any chevy anyday of the week.

Tint and wheels. Decked box in the bed. S and B Cold Air filters under the hood. Shiftpower throttle response controller.
I bought a 2023 hybrid back in July. The hybrid motor is designed for the added hp and torque and not for mileage. It is Frigging FUN to drive. I drive a lot and I've got 15,000 city miles on the road in it. I did add a box that plugs into the accelerator and changes the acceleration rate. It is not the pedal commander, but something like it.

But it is still just plain fun to drive. Just putting it in tow/haul mode and it is a lot peppier. It is comfortable and the ride is awesome.

3k miles on my ‘24 Tundra. Just got out of a 2023 Sierra 1500 6.2L that I had a lot of problems with. Was glad to trade. Had nagging electronics issues that the dealer couldn’t replicate nor fix (the same system a Chevy would have in it) and a busted front differential after 25K miles. I’ve enjoyed my Toyota so far.

There is no definitive answer to your question. Some isolated, incomplete data will show issues on a few 2024. But those are a small sample of overall sales. Are those data points representative of a much larger population? Nobody can tell you for sure (though some will claim they can).

Go on any forum for a specific brand and you’ll convince yourself to never buy any model after seeing the horror stories. GM has electronics issues and lifter failures. Ford has transmission issues and major PowerBoost problems. I don’t even pay attention to Ram because I hate their trucks.

Buy what you want and like.

I have a 24 SR5 with 3,000 miles. The only quirk it has for me is if I’m 3/4 tank or more full and back down a boat ramp my fuel level will read full. I only take notice to this after I load my boat the end of the day. Other users have reported this.

To me the truck handles great, quiet, smooth ride. It has great power. When I’m not towing and put it in sport mode I love merging into a highway and giving it hell. I am sure there are many 2022 up owners here that have never had a single issues and love their trucks.

Do I worry about the engine blowing? Yes. Toyota seems to be standing behind all of it. The v6 dodge motors have lifter problems that wear out the cam lobe and dodge turns the blind eye.

I am new here mainly just to look at mods and learn. Don’t shoot the poster but, I do wonder how many make an account just to come stir the pot and bitch. Anyone could make an account say they are having issues and really aren’t.

Longtime Toyota truck owner here going way back to '88!! I agree with the two posters just above that they all have issues and the internet just magnifies it. My '24 SR5 has been perfect in 4000 miles but I expect that.

On another forum that I'm on a guy bought a new F150 and the transmission was shuddering on the way home so he turned around and took it back and he needs a new transmission on a truck that has 50 miles on it. I'm going to enjoy my truck and not sweat it.

12k miles now on my 2024 SR5 bought in May. Easiest truck experience I’ve had thus far. At a certain point, there’s not much you can do but trust that a brand, which has an exceptional reputation for reliability, doesn’t want to lose that label. I came from Silverado which was in the shop every two months, Ford’s quality hasn’t been good for years for the price of their trucks, and let’s not even get started on RAM build quality.

    send it.

I like the new V6TT so much that if I had the cash I’d buy a second gen and motor swap the 5.7 with the V6TT. Old school tech with new school power, best of both worlds
