So not sure if this is due to the engine debris….hoping it is….but while I was accelerating on road my engine just shut off and told me to pull over. Everything else was working…power steering, radio, etc it just would not accelerate. I pull off road and turned the truck off. I didn’t hear any knocking or anything else, it just shut off. Now when I try and turn it on the truck sounds like it tries to turn over but nothing. The truck has a check engine light on but my code reader doesn’t show any codes. When I tried to see if it was the battery and tried to jump it I smelled burning electrical and saw smoke coming from engine area so stopped that quick. My truck is a 2022.

    Any thoughts?

Bearings plus whatever other damage you did when attempting to jump-start.

If you're currently on side of road I would call tow truck. If you're somewhere where you can work on it you can try to manually rotate crankshaft to see if it's locked up.

But it sounds locked up and you smoked your starter.

Same thing just happened to my friends 23 which was not part of the recall. He had a little smoke come into the cab. Dealer thought it was his AC unit but they then said it was the starter. They replaced the starter and sent him on his way. He got home and engine was making a terrible noise. They towed it back to the dealer and verified that he spun a bearing. They have his truck now and are replacing the engine but couldn’t give him a time frame. Unless this is my friend who posted this, sounds very similar

Wondering how many miles on your truck? I am starting to believe that we are seeing a pattern and my guess is that the problem is much more widespread than the just metal shavings from improper cleaning of the blocks during casting.

One has to wonder if Toyota will have to eventually replace all these engines up to the bearing change they made in 24. I get the metal shavings but if they felt that was all there was to it "Why" did they feel the need to change the bearings in 24.

I bet they will have to as well. I would think they did a cut off at close to 100,000 just to keep it somewhat manageable and hope that mid 2023’s and early 24’s don’t rack up the milage as quick. Maybe they will recall all those once the first batch are handled. It will be interesting to see if any 24’s with the bearing change have failures

Here's the thing. As had been said before, Many people buy Toyota's and repeat buy because of their reputation of reliability. Toyota will and is taking a hit right now because of this. But, if they go all in and do the right thing they in the long run could sell even more of their vehicles. Back in 1992 I bought my first Toyota truck and at around 40,000 miles it blew a head gasket. I had it tow to the Dealership. Pull up in the wrecker and was met by the service manager and a tech who immediately look at the truck and said it's a head gasket. The manager said Toyota knows about this and covers it up to 100,000 miles. While we were talking they brought a loaner car around for me and told me my truck would be ready to pick up in a few days. I still remember driving off in the loaner feeling shock at how well I had been taken care of and thinking if this is what Toyota does for it's customers why would i ever want to go anywhere else. Since 92 I have owned 7 Toyota's . Add up how much they have made off my repeat purchases.

Given that it's under warranty, I'd get it to a dealership.

Not sure why you tried to jump it when it had power (lights, power steering, etc.), though?

It had power. I tried to jump it cause I got a notification while I was waiting to be picked up that the battery was low so I thought maybe the battery was bad.

When my bearing went bad, I also thought it was just a battery or starter because it tried to start a few times. I did have that same smoke (that smelled electrical) coming from the engine bay. Dealer said my started partially melted from the strain of trying to spin the engine with the bad bearing. Mine has been with the dealer since May 22nd, they're still working on replacing the engine. Best of luck to you though!

I traded my 22 in before the recall for a 24. You folks know what month the bearing change on the 24's happened?
FYI. Don't regret the trade in. Went with the crew max, Double cab back seat was too small for anything.
    Thanks.....

That info was provided somewhere in these forums but was likely purged in the Great 3rd Gen cleansing era.

If you watch Car Care Nut's YT video on the V6 engine problems, he did some digging and found the block part #'s changed after 01/24 and bearings 1 and 4 were possibly changed after 04/24. Haven't seen any further details on what exactly is different, though.

Got the diagnosis today….catastrophic engine failure….complete engine replacement needed. Was given an estimate of months before fixed. Well guess I should get used to this loaner.

Sorry to hear it’s gonna be months.
I certainly hope you get a Tundra loaner.
You bought a truck to do truck stuff, only fair you get a truck if it’s gonna be “months” before your ride back.
I’d complain hard if they try to give you anything else.

They gave me multiple options. Today was a RAV4 or 4Runner and Monday I could get a tundra or Tacoma. Just went with the 4Runner….i been without a car since Sunday and the dealership wouldn’t give me a damn thing until they diagnosed it.

Man, that sucks. I hope they get you set up quickly and do the job right.

Have you added your info to @ColoradoTJ 's failure thread? It sucks it happened to you, but adding the data can't hurt. https://www.tundras.com/threads/3-4-i-force-engine-failures.121107/unread

Sorry to hear that, hope they're able to sort it relatively quickly. Mine has been with the dealer since May 22nd. After the first 30 days with a loaner Taco they gave me a brand new '24 Tundra Platinum as a loaner so I'm being very patient as they sort mine out. Happy to put all the miles and wear/tear on their truck instead of mine for a few months.

They ended up giving me a 24 limited. I asked again about the time to get replaced. Service department stated they can’t do anything until the official recall is sent to the dealership….makes no sense but whatever gets me to the 90 day lemon law.

honestly man, this totally blows, but...

let me just throw this out there food for thought. It may be WAY better for you for them to wait (especially if they gave you a loaner truck) until the recall repair gets under way, rather than them jumping on it now with the methods used to date to fix it now.

that way, you will get a full brand new long block and not a stupid ass short block disaster.

so my advice, if you want to keep the truck at all, drive their truck and try and be patient and wait for that long block repair.

Nothing like making Tundra payments for months while driving something you can't use fully.

Keep us posted to see if they step up to loan you an actual Tundra and if they are restricting you on it's use.

If you have a loan and its via TFS I wonder if they would cover a few months of your payment while the truck just sits there? Might be worth a shot. Maybe help ease the pain a bit.

I would do things to that truck I’d never do to my own. Beat the piss out of that thing to see what it can handle.
I am pleasantly surprised they gave you a tundra.

Got my Tundra back after 100 days at the dealer. They replaced the engine with a short block, so not ideal but at least the engine turns again. Seems to run like new but will certainly keep an eye on it for issues. They showed me the cost for all the work on my truck they're sending to Toyota on my truck, just under $37,000 with parts and labor. Glad I didn't need to pay a dime!
Was a little surprised to see the description on the paperwork, says "found significant debris passed through oiling system", I know that is what they recall says but with all the news/videos floating around I wasn't 100% sold that was the root cause, but based on the tech's description I guess now I believe it.
