Hi All! I have a 2000 Tundra with 140000 miles. I have driven plenty of highway miles but my O2, Cat and Evap systems are "not ready" when I go to emission test center. I see similar posts but no one has got back as to whether the advice/solution has worked. Don't want to throw parts at it. Any ideas?
    Thank You!

First thing you need to share is what codes are thrown. Otherwise all you can do is throw parts at it.

EVAP is a closed, vacuum-based system starting at the fuel tank and extending to the engine bay. You're almost always going to have one of three issues: Too much pressure (purge valve not opening, something clogged), too little pressure (something cracked, broken, disconnected), or a invalid data (bad sensor).

There's always a chance your cats are clogged too, but without codes, we had NFC which one of those three it could be, so can't offer up suggestions.

Go to any local auto parts big-box store if you don't have a code reader. They can scan codes for free. Then get back to us.

Start cold, let idle to warm.

Drive on regular roads about 50-55mph steady for several miles. Above or below that some monitors won't set. If you have the scanner, keep checking to see if they 'set' during the drive.

The evap system for sure needs multiple starts driving at highways speeds won't do it. Also I think it doesn't run if the tank is full or lower than 1/4.

Here in Colorado I can pass emission if everything else works and the evap isn't ready, may be worth checking your state.

EVAP/CAT/ O2 not ready is not a code its a status. The status is that the self test is not yet complete. There may or may not be codes once the test is completed.

When was your battery last disconnected or replaced? Or has it died and been recharged? Was work done on the truck where someone could've disconnected the battery without your knowledge? When was the last time the ecu was unplugged? How many times have you driven it since then? What are your longest trips since then? Does it get to full temp when driven? Does it get completely cool when off? All these things determine when the tests will run. Until they run you are not smog test ready.

Yeah, sorry about that. It's 4, I still haven't eaten lunch, brain not working.

I don't know what the drive cycle is to passively force EVAP to fully test, but it's something you can normally force the vehicle to test instantly using a proper diag tool.

I remember for my MKIV GTI and for most of the older GM pickups I've owned, for example, there was a crazy series of driving conditions you had to go through. Drive X miles at Y speed, then Z miles at A speed, Idle for whatever time - this isn't fully accurate, but you get the idea.

Do you have access to a tool programmed to initiate a full test cycle?

@rock climber I know here in Atlanta, if EVAP isn't in ready state with a PASS on record, they send you on your way. Learned that the hard way a few cars back. I really, really hate emissions. I get it, but the systems are too fallible and convoluted to debug. I'm cool with environmental protections, but if you're going to enforce them, make the damn systems smarter and easier to diagnose.

Thank you all for responding so quickly. Check engine light is not on and I have hooked up a Moodus Ultra from Snap On and there are no codes present. I have driven many highway miles and put on over 1000 miles overall since emission told me of "not ready" status. Neither dowstream O2 is showing any life on scan tool.

Have you checked coolant temp and the coolant temp sensor reading? If the ECM isn’t seeing the coolant temp it wants, it won’t get to ready / pass.

That's super helpful info you've just added. Wish it was in the first post. You may want to see this: https://www.snapon.com/Diagnostics/US/KB/DQT-DD-Toyota-EVAP-Test.htm

Not sure if it'll help in your case, but this is dealing specifically with the Modis and Toyotas and difficulty entering forced EVAP test.
