Just wondering how many users here actually upgrade their factory exhaust to something different. on my SR, planning on ordering the Trd exhaust muffler, since it’s under 250 bucks. Also was looking at the Carven exhaust, looks like combining it with the Trd muffler is gonna be one loud beast, at least according to the YouTube video. Just trying to figure out how many people here stick with their factory quiet mufflers, or Upgrade to something else.

a few answers from owners - DD (primarily pre Gen3), Carven and the standard usual replacements from your local muffler shop. I have the TRD Pro Dual exhaust and Carven CT1007. I also have in my garage the original tail pipe section which has the resonator. Gonna run the Dual exhaust and see how it sounds/performs and switch tail pipe back if I don't like the setup. DD says they do not have a Helmholtz Resonator for the Gen3 to add to the Carven. I have a TIG welder who will make one for me if it comes to that. No solid answer here but the one that says you have options and "sound" is a relative thing. GL.

I hear you, but according this this video, around 11:30 mark, you have the tundra with TRD dual tip exhaust and the stock muffler with resonator, both with same carven exhaust. And the difference in sound is huge. Dirtydeeds exhaust is not to my taste for some reason.

I’m not really concerned about any power gains, just want to have something that sounds like a truck. Out of all the setups so far that I have been googling, this combination (although doesn’t sounds similar) but is the one that comes closest to a “V8” sound.

Can't speak for all but I rarely use the full skinny pedal - the video driver likes to use all of the skinny pedal. If you want to drive like a maniac, you will not only get "loud noise" but you will get shit for mileage. Drive normal and use a reasonable acceleration and the results will be different. The stock muffler is great for those who don't want to hear what you want to hear. IMO the video is not representative of how most of us use our trucks.

Understandable but be careful you can lose low end torque if your not careful and that’s what a truck is all about

good luck in your search and put up a video when you get it dialed in

Dirty deeds options are probably the best based on your criteria.

Really? Didn’t know that part. Since it’s not a straight cat back is there a chance of a significant loss of low end torque?

wonder is it is possible to lose low end if you are using the same diameter oem piping. seems like it is the volume of the muffler that would dictate that. Gen3 is 3 inch piping. Wonder what DD uses with his systems?

Probably smaller than 3, since in the video, after he cuts the original muffler off he slides the DD end inside the original piping not on top.

That’s the sound I’m looking for. Thank you. I think I’ll be good even without the TDR muffler tips. You got that clamp situation figured out that you mentioned ?

I figured it out but they are no longer including the tailpipe. You could always call and ask to see if you can get one since they haven’t changed the price of the kit. The shims work just fine and it’s definitely not going anywhere.

Before my truck arrived I was scouring the web looking for an exhaust system that would make this 6 banger sound a little better.
Like you OP,I was a hound on YT looking and looking, but first off ya gotta remember sound quality is a whole lot different on every computer & phone sound system....So with that said,it's pretty much a crap shoot unless you can go to a shop and they can install a shit ton of different systems for your ears to hear.
I ended up getting Magna flow Street Series, it's all stainless and a swap out from the cat back, there are no resonators and the muffler is about 1/3 the size of OEM and a whole lot lighter.
Basically it Y pipes into the muffler and singles out then back to duels just after the rear axle on the drivers side & very similar to what has been illustrated in pics before my post.
Coming from an 8 cylinder to a 6 I knew I wasn't going to be excited with the lack of sound but this system is pretty damn good (IMHO) I don't get the HWY droning at a steady speeds but when you hit it, you can hear it come alive with every gear changing.
Everyone has there own taste on things and the choice that I made I'm pretty happy with, this truck has been nothing short of amazing and couldn't be happier with it and this swap out made that sound transition from 8 ~ 6 that much better.

Again it's all going to depend on what or who can get you excited with their enthusiasm and elaborate words mixed with cool videos to get you to bite the hook, but at the end of the day it's your decision & your $$ so choose wisely.
    Hope this helps.

    Good hunting

This has been proven false many times, especially on a turbo'd engine you want as free flowing an exhaust as possible. Free flowing exhaust means the turbos spin up faster, which directly translates to lower end torque.

I am going to wait for Borla to release something for us. They have a page saying its coming soon... Once it's out, I'll compare it with what is already available.
BTW, Carven has some bad reviews if you google them. Not saying that should sway you. Take them with a grain of salt but they are out there.

or steal the cats off it and sell them to a school teacher. BTW what exhaust you running on your Tundra? Or is it an Altima? Picks and sound clips of either or both just for shits and giggles.

I think the biggest thing that carven muffler has going for it is its weight compared to OEM.

Yeah I’m not trying to match v8 sound, just something more deeper and angrier, so I can feel like I’m driving a truck. But nothing too loud to make my kids deaf from a road trip. Magnaflow seems a bit too loud for me, another user mentioned he likes it. DD has lifetime warranty so that’s nice. There’s definitely a few factors to consider based on taste and budget. It’s not a V8, but whose to say you can’t make a V6 twin turbo sound nice

FWIW - if you are on the Fuel Leak / Fire Hazzard recall list you may want to wait to do the install of the exhaust parts being discussed in this thread. The most likely path to access the location of the parts to be "fixed" by the recall is up and over the muffler/drive shaft. It is my speculation that the Mother Ship may want to add a charge if your muffler is not OEM because it causes them extra work - yeah BS but based on some of the shenanigans going on with Dealers these days I would not put it past them. Hope I am wrong but until the recall fix is released (not temp fix) we won't know.

Good looking out... That would be a good reason to wait.. It gets frustrating when dealers nickel and dime you for shit like that. Like these aftermarket systems are usually bolt on and smaller than the factory anyways.

100% People will complain with every brand. Not every will like the same thing and sometimes people complain for dumb reasons. Thats why I said it shouldn't sway you. But it is smart to do a bit of research and be aware of what you could face. I don't have experience with Carven and I do with Borla. I have liked their products in the past and waiting for their release.
