My 2017 5.7 quad cab Tundra TRD is at 90,000 miles. Runs great but mileage alone says it is time to get a new vehicle. I really like this truck a lot, but I also really like the V8 on a dedicated work truck that tows a lot. Turbos have more issues and that are more expensive to fix. Two days ago I test drove a 2023 Tundra quad cab and frankly I did not like the V6 twin turbo. Before I decide to take my money in a whole new direction, I am curious what the Tundra V6 twin turbo drivers here have experienced since 2022. Thank you
    J

Just curious, you feel 90k is a lot?

If you’re thinking about trading up at 90k you’ll do the same with the 2022. So if you got the money why not? The power train warranty should cover you.

90k is just getting started :)

I have the 23 iForce Max hybrid and love it. Has more power, acceleration, and is quieter (I turned off the fake engine noise) than my friends' Ram Rebel and AT4.

Curious if you have test driven a hybrid?

I did test drive the hybrid, yes. Two days ago. Crewmax V6 twin turbo. Is that a fake engine sound I was hearing and really disliking? Some sound that I attributed to the turbos drove me nuts.

Guys, mileage is a subjective thing. Yes, I like driving up to 90,000-100,000 miles and then trading in or selling and buying brand new. It is just the way I do things, and it makes perfect, unassailable sense to me. We do the same with my wife's Toyota cars. This approach has worked for us for thirty years plus. Others may experience life differently, probably because they drive or use their vehicles differently. My pickups are working vehicles. I am in the land and timber business, and I routinely drive off-road because I have to, and I routinely haul a trailer that alone weighs 2,400 lbs and then add another 6,000 pounds of lumber onto it. It is just time to get another truck.

yep. They pump fake engine noise thru the speakers to emulate a V8 rumble. Why they do this I have no idea. You can disable it with Carista or ask the dealer to do it.

Much more pleasurable driving experience without it....

If I were you, I would look for a low mile (<50k) 2020 or 2021 Tundra. Stay with the proven V8. Drive it for the next couple/three years, then upgrade to a new Tundra.

The bugs will be worked out by then, and Toyota will balance the styling to make the truck look better.

Agreed that it is subjective. Just because you've always moved on way before you need to doesn’t mean that it’s necessary to do so now, especially when you have hesitations regarding the new platform (I do, too). I’d keep the truck another year or so to wait and see.

I beat the snot out of mine hauling and off-roading. I’m in a ‘21 at 46k miles, and I stick very closely to the Toyota accelerated maintenance schedule. I have no plans to move to anything else at any point in the near to distant future. I just don’t trust pandemic and post-pandemic vehicles yet.

Check out The Car Care Nut on YouTube. He frequently spotlights high mileage Toyota and Lexus vehicles and gives great tips for keeping them going beyond 300k miles.

If you are trading in at 90k or fewer, get a 3/4 ton Dodge. Heavy duty, lots of power and a lot of truck for the $. 90K is about the end of their service life too.

I love mine. The engine and transmission pairing was really done well. Tows very well. Good mileage (for a full size) roomy, looks great. Very capable truck.

I was gunna say, you should probably just get a 3/4 or 1 ton. A 7.3L Superduty with 4.30 gears would manhandle that trailer

    So to summarize:
    1. Most who don't own a new Tundra don't like them and don't recommend them.
    2. Most who do own a new Tundra like them and recommend them.
    3. Gen 2.5 and earlier have proven reliability.
    4. Gen 3 can't have proven reliability just yet.
    5. The longer you wait the more you'll know about the gen 3.
    6. If you tow alot consider a 3/4 ton or see bullet 4.

Same as the folks over at the Taco forum. The "Second Genners" would routinely troll us third gen owners relentlessly, mostly talking out of their collective ass.

You'd think things would be different here, but... lol...

If this forum was ever to go one full week without a Gen 3 complaint thread, I'd consider purchasing one.
Currently, it can barely make it 8 hours or so.

If you value long-term reliability over everything and like the idea of driving an overbuilt truck that was designed before Toyota start twisting themselves in knots to meet ever-tightening EPA restrictions, the 2nd gen is for you.

If you value updated tech, have been waiting for Toyota to refresh the Tundra for a very long time, and are willing to step into the slightly-unknown of a new model not having an extremely long track record of dependability because it's still Toyota and they're still committed to being more reliable than everyone else just like always, then the 3rd gen is for you.

We're all still driving Tundras, right? Lol. :notsure:
To be fair, I don't think the 2nd or 2.5 gen forums go a week without a complaint or issue that has the owner puzzled.

To be fair, note the numbers of how many Gen 2 and Gen 2.5 Tundras exist in comparison with the Gen 3.

I'm glad you like your Gen 3.
Whatever works for you is peachy with me.

I love my Gen 2.5 and the fact that it has been paid for since early 2019.
Life is better without a vehicle payment.

If it ain't broke, I see no reason to fix (or replace) it.
I don't need the latest thing when I already own a truck that has proven reliability.

Although I do enjoy some of you putting fart cans on a V6 trying to the V8 sound..

This all kind of reminds me of the console wars back in the 2000s. People would typically only have one console, so that one was clearly the superior one and all the others were obviously so inferior.

I think it's like a weird human coping action to always think that what they have/choice they made is the best.

Lucky ! ... just bought the 16 in Jan 2021 and still got a ways to go. Could have put the mod money into balance and been a bit closer to payoff, but where's the fun in that? lol
