I know (think) that extended warranties are generally not worth it for new vehicles, but what about used? I am looking at a 2020 Tundra (39K miles) and think an extended warranty might be a good idea. Can get 60 mo./75K mi. for ~$2300 (that is 75K over the ~30K still under factory warranty). Thoughts?

Are there big differences in extended warranties (the one I mentioned above if from a non-Toyota dealer)? Their's seemed to cover everything drivetrain/engine outside of oil, brakes, & acts of God. I see, after searching other threads, that some folks "offer" extended warranties - feel free to PM me if necessary.

Don't bother. IMO the only worthwhile extended warranty is from the factory/manufacturer, and for Tundras, they are only available prior to the 3/36 expiration.

Used car dealers push extended warranties so they can make more money. They also add on destination fees & advertising fees you don’t have to pay for. Read over the sales contract carefully& question everything.

You're out of the Toyota extended warranty anyway (based on your miles) and if you go through a 3rd party is pretty much worthless. So just forget about it now.

Last year I purchased a 2020 SR5 with 18,000km's on it and declined the extended warranty. At first it sounded like a good idea, but after reading the contract, it was $200 a month, not for a year!

We just bought a 2019 Subaru with 25,000km's and declined the extended warranty and maintenance package also. Maintenance package was about $3000 for two years........nope!

I would rather gamble on myself than giving dealers more money!

    Cheers

Extended warranty is worth it in my opinion. I used it for both brands, my Toyota Tundra 2013 on some MAF failure that cost about $3K to fix it and on my Honda Pilot transmission failure that was about $7K and then some other random and small stuff. Both brands, my extended warranty cost about $1400 each for 10 years / 125K so is worth it.

The service one it is a ripoff indeed.

    At $1400 for 10 years, yup that's reasonable, but $200 per month........nope!!

    Cheers

10 year for $1400 is a no brainer! I am thinking hard on the 5 year/75K for $2300 or 6 year/100K for $2600. What I am thinking now though, most problems may likely occur after it expires? Or maybe not?? My bearing issue came at 6 year/100K so with the added coverage, it would be covered (coverage is over and above what is left on factory warranty. Really a gamble - you get it, you won't need it; don't get it, and you will.

I see 3rd party extended warranties can run $3400-$6000+, so $2600 doesn't seem too bad.

3rd party warranty are a joke based on what I heard, never had one. They're in the business not spending money on you. Toyota extended warranty is the way to go but again you missed the mileage window.

I bought a used 2018 with no extended warranty. It had 32,500 miles on it. I bought this generation Tundra on purpose for it's reliability rating with proper maintenance. I'll pay when it breaks which odds are quite low to happen.

Now on the new Tundra with twin turbo and hybrid. I would absolutely buy an extended Toyota warranty. I'll likely buy one used that is Toyota certified which includes a very good factory backed warranty. I will wait for all the bugs to be worked out first.

Both Fords (v-6 twin turbos) I recently owned I got Ford extended warranties. A nice thing about Ford is any dealer can sell it to you and there a couple online that do it rather cheaply compared to the markup your local dealer will do. I only used it on one. A button fell off the stereo of my 2017 Expedition. I just wanted another to glue back on. They said they couldn't do that and replaced the entire thing.

I did have good luck on a used non factory warranty on a 2015 Hybrid Avalon. The automatic shade for the back window stopped working. Had it been out of my pocket I would have just left it down and forget about it. The warranty covered it and the bill was around $3,500! The part was expensive and the labor high to do it. I'll never buy any car with auto window shades again.

Thanks for the input. After a bit of deliberation, I am not going to get the extended warranty. Mostly for it likely not covering items that are going to fail (like my bearing issue) and that there is a process ("complicated"?) to utilizing the warranty (since it isn't factory or from Toyota).

That is most likely a good decision. Now put that same amount away in an interest bearing account for future need. Congrats on the new truck.

Wow, 3k for a MAF problem and 7k for Honda trans. The dealers really milked the warranty for those repairs.

That's between the dealership and the car manufacturer, let them sort it out as is not my money :) I am sure that's not what the manufacturer paid right? I am sure they have their own internal deals. But if I was to pay outta my own pocket that was the price for me.

Well, I sure hope if a dealer told you those prices for a MAF and Honda trans, you would run as fast as you could out of there. But yes, they have their internal shady deals.
