Hello all, new to the forum after recently purchasing a used 2022 SR5 Tundra. I was hoping y’all might be able to help me out with a noise I’m hearing. When turning at slow speeds either forward or reverse (I seem to hear it the most when I put it in reverse to back into a spot), I can hear a pretty faint, rhythmic knocking sound. It doesn’t sound like metal at the front end like CV joints or tie rods. It almost sounds hydraulic in nature. I believe it’s too faint to capture in a video. I’m still learning the truck so it may be perfectly normal and just my ignorance. Thanks!

    Factory tires?
    Warped brake rotors?
Does it do it just in your driveway or everywhere?

A/T tires but it did it prior to the new tires. It does it every where. It’s most pronounced when turning the steering wheel at low speeds after you’ve come to a stop, either forward or reverse. Knocking is not really the right word. It’s more of a shutter.

pwpblue not that I’m aware of. I can be sitting still and just turn the steering wheel back and forth and hear the sound.

If it's happening when stopped, can you get a friend to help you locate the sound or record it for us

@Bob I've recorded the video where you can hear, now trying to figure out how to upload. It doesn't like the .mov extension of the video.

This was taken while parked, simply turning the steering wheel back and forth.

I think I have the same issue as you describe. I hear a very faint thud when I turn the wheel while accelerating slowly. I also feel it faintly on the steering wheel. I haven't noticed it while parked or when accelerating quickly. It seams most prevalent when turning to the left. Let me know if you figure out the cause.

Will do! I was primarily hoping to see if others were experiencing the same conditions or if it was isolated to my truck.

I'm not an auto mechanic or a Toyota expert. I'm also not familiar with the 3rd gen and what may be completely different, but I've been around machinery in general for most of my life and that sounds a lot like a pump. If I had to take a wild guess from here, behind my phone, listening to that vid, I'd say something needs to be looked at between the power steering pump and steering rack. (Unless it's all electric steering now?)

It's electric power steering on all models

That makes sense, thank you! Did you happen to find any documentation on the electric power steering and the associated noise? I’d love to see what they have to say.
