Why does tire shopping have to be so complicated?

So I called the tire shop to order the AT3W that folks on here recommended, the guy then tells me he can sell me the "A" ones for cheaper because Falken is having a sale on them. I read the reviews and they were bad, and he goes on to say oh this is what dodge puts on all the Rams to sell them. Red flag goes off because A) I def don't want a tire that is put on a vehicle from the factory because those are general junk and B) I am wondering if this guys has a customer that is trying to get rid of factory tires to upgrade and this guy is trying to pon them onto me.

Does anyone know which is better, he also claimed the A ones are 6 ply, but I read online that they are one three ply and I didn't see any warranty on them milage wise. Also he claimed the ones I would be getting would be brand new.

I am just concerned that he is trying to scam me! Anyone have info?

    Thanks,

    T

Quick Google search says the A is more on-road use oriented but yeah. If you're gonna go that route, get the Yokohama Geolandar G015 for $215/ea instead. If you wanted the Falken Wildpeak AT3W then go the full monty.

So the A is less of a tire right? He is claiming they are better and normally 70.00 more per a tire. then the AT3W, is he lying?

After researching I realized this guy lied to me about various factors that I specifically asked him regarding this tire, so I have drawn the conclusion that he was probably trying to offload them on someone he thought would be dumb enough to take the bate, a woman. From the reviews these tires are absolute junk and have very poor ratings (the At3wa), and as the previous poster said the tread isn't even the same! Nice try A-hole!

I graciously cancelled my appointment and moved on to another tire shop, I will be getting the AT3W as planned initially, and at a better price!! Glad my intuition told me something was up!!

Thank you MedCity for your response!

The AT3W is a great tire. I liked the idea of a tread warrant for an AT tire and they are 3 peak snowflake rated, so great in our long winters.

You made the right choice. Now report that A-hold salesperson to the manager or above.

Yup, I feel for women that have to interact with service folks in the automotive and motorcycle technical industry. My fiance is plenty capable and competent and knows what she needs/wants, but has basically just accepted that if she tries to request things herself for her vehicles, there's far more bullshit and pushback involved than if I just walk in and say it myself. Same words, same parts, but I get things without stupidity sprinkled atop.

It was a small tire shop privately owned that I called initially, the owner is the one that lied to me. I called one of the larger tire shops and that's where I got honest answers, as well as doing additional research on the interweb. I was trying to give a small shop the work, instead of the larger chain store, but we can see how that worked out!

That sucks, but at least you got it all figured out before getting an inferior tire.

The AT3W is a big (compared to same specs in other brands), heavy, aggressive tire that does well on the road too. Hope you like them.

Seems several dishonest tire shops are trying to say the AT3wa is as good as the AT3w.

I am very happy with them, thank you. I ended up getting them at Tire Warehouse for less than the small tire shop wanted to sell me the garbage ones for. I think the game the small tire shop was trying to play was sell the presumed to be dumb lady an inferior tire and charge the price of the superior tire, thus making more profit.

I was very pleased with the service at my local TW, very informative and very professional!

Somewhere I think I read that the AT3wa was originally developed in cooperation with Ram as an OEM off-road tire for them to slap on their new 1500 trucks that was more road oriented to meet MPG / CAFE.

My stock tires are AT3wa, slippery on wet road, poor grip on muddy/snow. I am just gonna run them until winter and flip them to a more decent tires.
    I’ll look into AT3w,
    Thanks everyone

20K on them and still happy with them, they have actually gotten better with wear. I also heard they don't make these anymore, not sure what they replaced them with now, or if they will be as good!
