Toyota says first oil change on my 2020 Tundra isn’t until 16K kilometres. Went through this with Wifeys 2019 Rav 4 and made them do it at 10k.
    Just don’t drive that much.
    Thoughts?

Manual say the same. At the amount I drive my oil change won’t happen until 2022

Yeah, I'm going to do it at least once a year as I'll never hit the mileage.

I have a FFV and do mine at about 10,000 miles. Blackstone Labs suggest I go 13,000 miles. But I'm good at 10K. All good. The oil is still amber colored at 6,000 miles.

Full oil change at 10,000 , but filter only at every 5000. Filters are cheap , and only mobile one. Also changing filter cleans up filter bowl and good check for contaminants, and oil color .

Do it at 16,000 kms (10,000 miles) and don't look back. You'll be just fine.

I have the 1st five oil changes for free so they refused to do mine until 10k miles, I have had it since February and just turned over to 6k miles?
I said well the window sticker says 1st service 6k miles and they said that’s check fluids and rotate tires. I said you guys are over an hour away and Discount which is where I bought my tires and rims from are 10 minutes away and the tire rotation is free so I will have that done there she said “ okay you can waive the first service (6000 mile) sincE it’s only tire rotation.

I bought mine 3 weeks ago and just turned 3000 miles.

I'm thinking about doing an oil/filter change soon just to be safe.

I bought my 2020 early March, and have just 3000 miles, I am planning to change my engine oil very soon. Although it may not really apply to this modern truck engine, I remember back in the early 1970's buying new motorcycles me and my buddies would change the oil at 500 miles and the drained oil was somewhat silver in color from all the metal in the oil. Though that may have been more from the fact that the oil lubricated both the engine and transmission, I still can't shake the idea that early oil change after break in is only a good idea.

My biggest decision has been what oil to use, thinking I'll use "Shell Rotella Gas Truck" for this first oil change. I have been using Mobil 1 in every thing for years, including boat, motorcycle, lawnmower and snow blower, all good. But after reading different oil threads for Tundra it seems people say Mobil 1 makes for more noise in the 5.7 Tundra engine. At any rate this oil will be changed sometime next spring, then I will make a decision on what brand of oil to use and go to yearly oil changes. I expect to drive this truck less than 8000 miles a year, it will spend most of the winter in my garage waiting for spring. My wife and I are both retired and kids grown so we can for the most part just use her vehicle in the winter.

Toyota told me the first service after 6 months/ 5000 miles was a "service 1", which is just rotating the tires and checking a bunch of stuff.

Oil collects moisture and impurities through use, and the way it is used. That is why your maintenance manual gives differing oil change intervals, consisting of both time and or mileage. Depending on how you use your engine if you only change the oil by mileage you risk doing damage to it.

When I bought my truck I enquired about the free oil changes and was told Toyota had changed there policy and no longer required 10,000 mile intervals. The customer would receive two oil changes that could be used when you wanted, if you used them at 5,000 miles, and drove 10,000 miles the first year you have exhausted the free oil changes in one year.

Let the dealership do your free one, or drain out most of your oil and over-torque the plug and filter and pretend they did. I know they are not all bad techs but the guy that was delivering pizza last week is doing oil changes this week.

I did my first one myself at about 1,200 miles. I like doing the first change early on a new engine. Replaced with M1 and will now change according to the maintenance minder. I have no intention of letting anyone else change my oil. I’ve had it goofed up too many times at dealerships to let them do it.

My engine oil is blacker than black at 5k miles.

ive changed my oil every 3-5k miles since new with no regrets. I also do a change at 1000 miles old on new vehicles just incase.

GOOD OLD OIL CHANGES, what a topic, if you have black oil , it's a clear sign of bad rings with blow by , and oil is turning black from carbon , or you are using a darker oil to start with. And if you are getting water , or condensation in oil , or on inside of oil cap, it's from your driving habits , mainly engine isn't reaching full operating temps , or just not long enough drives. Many people drive short distances alot , or don't let engine warm up even a little, this will cause some condensation, Newer oils will not break down or collect condensation like older oils used to if car sits for long periods of time , just let warm up good before driving. As for 1rst change , whatever you are happy with. As for my 2013 when I change filter at 5000 , oil is nice and clean in bowl , and at 10000 , for complete change it still looks really good .

Moisture gets "burned" off when driven to temperature. One of the oils jobs is to capture impurities, case in point my wife's VW diesel, that oil is black with a few hundred miles, doing it's job. How is having an oil in for 12 months and 2000 miles going to negatively affect an engine?

I have a FFV and Toyota calls for my oil to be changed every 5 thousand miles and they also rotate the tires. My wife’s 4 Runner is in there at 5 thousand miles and they rotate the tires and change the oil at 10 thousand. My service guy says bring in my truck every six months so we can use every bit of the two years we can, after that it will go to the 5 thousand miles oil change and tire rotation for my TRD Sport Tundra CrewMax and 5 thousand for my wife’s 4 Runner for tire rotation and 10 thousand for oil change.

Alot depends on how many total miles on engine , and where and how it is stored. A truck with 200,000 miles stored outside , with large changes in temps, yes can collect condensation , but still not enough to do any damage, but if rings worn bad ,and valve seats and seals worn, can create sludge in oil pan and valve cover area. If motor is good ,and oil is clean , when put away , should never have a problem. Many show and fancier cars and trucks have been known to set for long periods of time , no problem. I'd be more worried about trany and rear end seals getting hard , brake lines deteriorating , and belts and hoses drying out .
