    Hey guys.

Couldn’t wait for my new Tundra to come a couple months ago. Have put 1400 miles on it now and have never been able to get anything better than 11 MPG.

This is my average MPG whether I’m driving in Eco mode like Ms Daisy, or normal/spirited.

The lift and tire upgrade I did at 800 miles has made no difference in MPG.

As you all know, the advertised MPG is 21 HWY, 17 CITY. I can’t even sniff that, no matter how conservative I drive.

When you only get HALF the MPG that is advertised, it’s really hard not to feel like you got lied to and “taken”. I even have the wife at my neck upset that I bought a truck that is costing us so much gas money, when gas is the most expensive it’s ever been.

The dealership at first told me it would improve after 1K miles(yeah right). And of course, it hasn’t. Now they are saying to bring it in so they can check on things(I am highly skeptical they can do anything to improve it. If so, I’ll come back on here and eat crow).

Is anyone else having this problem with their 22’s?

Any info, experiences, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Just talking from my experience in my 2022 TRD sport.

I got really bad gas mileage in the beginning. Around 13 mix. But now at 4500 miles, I’ve gotten 21-22 mpg on highway at 3000 miles on truck. This was on my 7 hour trip about 450 miles from my home to Canada. Cruising 70-75 mph mostly. So it definitely got better.

City getting about 16 mpg average. That’s driving 10 min 5 miles to work.

This was at first bathroom break on the Canada trip

Hmm. Others with 3rd gens are doing much better, and I’m even getting 16 combined in my ‘21 with 285/75R18s just by keeping it at 65 when I’m on the highway.

Also, you should know that your dash is going to read lower than it should when you put bigger tires on it. I think your truck comes with 275/55R20s stock, which means your new 35x12s are 9.7% larger in circumference. So you need to add 9.7% to your dash readout. Still, seems lower than it should.

Do you let your truck idle for long periods of time? That factors in an mpg of 0 for all the time spent idling. How much stop and go driving do you do? Are you a hard braker? Do you consistently have to brake on the highway and then accelerate back up to speed? Driving style is a big part of it, but still, seems like something could be wrong.

Are you hand calculating or going off what the computer is telling you? If you're using the computer, is the readout based on "Total" or "Tank" average? I was seeing the same thing the first thousand or so miles. I switched over to tank ave and the mpg improved with each tank thereafter. I reconfirmed the numbers by hand calculating.

Also- what are you doing telling your wife how much your new toy is costing???

Something is not right as a lift and big tires will kill mpg.

EPA fuel economy rating isn’t an advertisement on what you’re going to see for fuel economy. It’s information for comparing the efficiency of vehicles before purchase. The window sticker has a disclaimer: “Actual results will vary for many reasons, including driving conditions and how you drive and maintain your vehicle”.

I get about 22~23 mpg per trip when commuting in my Tundra but I spend most of my time on the highway at around 65 mph. On weekends, when driving around town at 35-50mph with AC set to Auto 68, I’ll see 15~16 mpg.

The lift and tire upgrade are decreasing your fuel economy. Also, increasing the tire size means the computer readout for mpg will be lower than actual. Since the tire diameter is larger than stock, you travel a longer distance for each rotation of the tire so the odo will also be wrong.

Finally, if you drive on a lot of hills or get a lot of wind, you’re going to see a lot of drop in fuel economy.

Something is definitely off. Manual calculation comes out the same? I'm not getting 20s but 17 with a heavy foot all day. Sorry for your experience.

I regularly get in the twenties and my truck’s lifetime average over 4500 or so miles is 18.2. It’s a good mix of town and highway, and I’ve had the bed really loaded down twice.

Unless you’re constantly hauling or driving like a bat out of some hot place, I can’t imagine why you’d only be getting 11.

I’m at 15.6, which plateaued after pulling a camper last weekend. Was rising slowly before that though at ~3K miles on the odometer. I do not have a fuel efficient driving style :)

Honestly, the Tundra is known for poor fuel economy. Why be surprised? If fuel consumption was a concern, buying a Tundra would've been last on my list of candidates.

Define 'poor fuel economy'. If 11mpg was the standard nobody would be driving this. Full stop. 50% less than advertised something isn't right. Either his calculation or something else.

I am stupefied by people buying a pickup truck then complaining about fuel mileage.

Duh, it’s a heavy brick on wheels, jack it up with a lift kit, put bigger tires on it, what the hell do you expect?

Considering Tundras aren't even on the list for most fuel efficient trucks with the Ram 1500 13th place at 17 mpg overall (11 mpg city) I'd say that's pretty poor.

    Full stop.

You have 35s (based on your profile) with small motor compensating with a turbo in order to make power. This means in order to make power you're going to be in the boost more often, more time spent in the boost less mpg you will get. My wife had an ecoboost with big tires and the drop in mpg stock to big tires was dramatic for the same reason. It's going to be a more dramatic drop than an NA engine. I'm on 36s with the 5.7 and I get 12.9

Imo 800 miles is not enough to make judgement on mpg. It's a new truck , break in period, spirited driving when you get it etc.

    Sorry for your experience.

Are you hand calculating these numbers?
I am curious which octane / station /type of gas you are running as well.

I agree 11 is terrible and not what I would expect unless you had a 2nd gen with 35's.

I have a hard time believing that installing heavier / larger tires "had no affect", but there may not have been a noticeable change if something was already "wrong".

You make no mention of how you drive, where you drive (city stop and go, lots of stop lights / stop signs), if you are letting your truck idle ever, if you have disabled the auto shut-off at lights etc. Driving style and habits will obviously affect your numbers, but it does seem lower than I'd expect and can't imagine that is correct.

please let us know after the dealer checks things out.

I’m on skinny 35s (65lb each) and get 16 combined. That makes me think something is actually wrong with his 3rd gen. Unless it’s not broken in at all and he’s totally clueless to how aggressively he actually drives. Maybe he idles forever?

Or maybe something is dragging…his brakes or parking brake…or yeah he could just be totally clueless and in boost 90% of the time

My tires are 73 lbs per, wheels are about 30 lbs per, and on 7.5" of lift.

    I'm at 11.5 avg :goingcrazy:

Good suggestions for things to check.
    I run skinny 34’s (59lbs) and avg 13.1
I only went up 9 lbs at each corner on my 285 75 17s on icon six speeds. Crazy how different results are. I am in suburbs with lots of stop and go short trips. Not ideal for mpg. Also I’m at 5300ft elevation.

I’m in middle Tennessee. And getting that next .1 has become a game to me. It’s easy when you cruise at 60-65. Speed limit around downtown Nashville is 55, and people fly past me like I’m sitting still. I actually use the right lane, unlike most slower drivers. I’m at lower elevation than you, but we do have long grades and steep hills everywhere. My commute is mostly highway. I try to keep short trips to a minimum.

I don't know how you guys get such terrible mileage. Do you just keep your foot in it at every red light and stop sign?

I'm getting 17-18 in town and 22-23 hwy. This is confirmed at the pump.

Our v8’s our thirsty. I ruined the thread by saying 11 mpg was reasonable for a 5.7 on op’s tire size (with lots of stop n go and or hotvrodding / hooning around)

FYI if you are on mobile device rotate 90 degrees and you can see our info on the side.

sorry to pollute the thread…and planet.
