    Hi folks,
I know this was beaten to death in many other threads but with the limited choices where to order here in Eastern Canada I still have questions.
Wanted to use Mobil 75W90 in diff and transfer case for my 2012 Tundra
but locally NAPA has only one qt left, and I'm not willing to pay $36 /qt on line.

Amsoil has these listed for my truck:
    https://www.amsoil.ca/lookup/auto-a...yl-engine-code-1ur-fe-2/?volume=metric-volume

    Differential:
    https://www.amsoil.ca/p/severe-gear-75w-90-svg/?code=SVGPK-EA
    Transfer case
    https://www.amsoil.ca/p/manual-transmission-transaxle-gear-lube-75w-90-mtg/?code=MTGPK-EA

Needless to say, I'm confused why the transfer case oil is manual transmission GL-4

    Can someone please chime in?
If you have better oil suggestion I'm also interested, since the only stuff in stock locally is
    Pennzoil
    https://www.napacanada.com/en/p/PEN550042082
    or
    https://www.napacanada.com/en/p/PEN550042046

    Thanks

You probably have other local auto parts stores that will have the Mobil in stock. Its good, popular and common.

Spend the $ for the right fluid, I mean what are we talking, an extra $50 bucks on a service that is performed every several years/40-50k miles. The $ is nominal and not worth worrying about.

Fluid specs are in your owner's manual, use any brand you like as long as it meets/exceeds toyota's specs.

    Thanks for reply!
I wish, nothing made by well known brands is in stock and local Toyota dealers do have it in drums only.(God knows what they use)
So, any idea why is Amsoil showing different fluid for the transfer case?

    Thanks

not sure, but I have read here where several use Amsoil. There are various threads discussing fluids for TC.

These may help, I was easily able to find them using the search function in upper right of the tundras page

Received reply from Amsoil tech support.

Your transfer case is capable of using either a GL-4 or GL-5 rated fluid, so you can use the Severe Gear 75W-90, product code SVG, in the differentials and transfer case. The nice part about this fluid is that it is a GL-5 rated fluid but is safe in GL-4 applications.

Any other questions, please feel free to ask.

    @lifeisfun

Do you have a Walmart near by that you can get differential fluid from? or you can order some online which should be a little bit more economical. This is US pricing.. but you should have something similar. Also you dont have to change it immediately. You can wait till you get these shipments in then get it changed. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Super-Tech-Full-Synthetic-Gear-Lubricant-SAE-75W-90-1-Quart/309470123

BTW Walmart does not make this fluids..they buy it from another reliable OEM's

I just put Valvoline full synthetic 75w90 in the diffs and TC of my 09 LX570. I can't believe how much more smoothly and easily it gets into and out of low range now. Trying to disengage lit up my dash before. Now, it just works as new. I think the old oil had 150k on it. :eek2:

Valvoline is great. I used Amsoil in my truck's diffs. Amsoil in my old 4Runner. The nice thing is, your transfer case is old enough that it still takes the same 75W90 as the diffs. The newer BW TC specs straight 75W, and while I don't think there is anything magical about the OEM 75W, I think you should definitely stick to the weight the owner's manual calls for.

If you're ordering Amsoil, you should pay for a 1-yr membership. Pretty sure you'll come out ahead in the end. The member discount on 8qt of 75W90 outweighs the membership fee.

Yes, will go with the membership for sure.
Also considering changing the trans oil ( just drain and adding ) but not sure if I should do it or not.

Wow wow @lifeisfun .. make sure you know what you are doing with the Trans Oil. Its very specific to the transmission and follows a very precise procedure on how to fill and check it. Search around here and youtube before you plan on doing the transmission oil change.

Yeah, I would just drain it, measure how much I drained and fill it with the same amount.

LOL no I would just look up the way to do it.. Its not rocket science but you need to know how to do it before draining it out. You may need fill it more than what you drain out. Which is why there is a whole checking the transmission while it is within a specific temperature range part comes in. No reason to get fancy about it. Just do it the way Toyota wants you to do it.

BTW you know these transmissions do not have a fill plug in the engine compartment right? These tranny's are sealed.. So that people don't over or under fill them on purpose.

Well, Toyota claims that it's Lifetime fluid
Most mechanic claim that if it wasn't changed before, and the truck is this old, not to change whole volume of the oil.
Yes I know that there is no standard fill plug in the engine compartment.

    Pretty things
...Guaranteed for the lifetime of the fluid!

I would also look up the DIY "hack" to put the truck in transmission fluid leveling mode... And I have

These machines are not cheap enough to just "wing it". I also use the Toyota WS fluid exclusively. Tho it probably isn't the "best" fluid, it seems to work really well in these transmissions and proven for long period of time/mileage.
