Ford dealer won't take my truck in trade until permanent fuel line fix is done

Trying to trade for a 2024 4 Door F250 XLT w/ 4x4. They test drove my Tundra and said its fine - even gave me a dollar amount (The number started with a "1" :sawzall: )but said they won't do anything until it is fixed once they saw the open recall.

Struck me as odd since dealers will usually bend over backwards to make a sale. Has anyone else had this problem? Is this bogus?

Sell private party. I wouldn't even deal with the recall.

Given the # of recalls coming for COVID vehicles that dealer is going to be turning down a lot of deals. Possible they see your trade in as a wholesale and holding out for a trade they can rip somebody a new one on their lot. That happens.

But end of month will rent coming due for salesman, sales manager and finance manager I would assume they take it

It could be legal policy as well. When I purchased my Corvette there was an open recall and they would not let it leave the dealership until fixed. So I had to ship the car from Orlando FL to Colorado a month later.

Went to test drive the 1/2 ton Dodge diesel last August. Was told I could test drive it but they couldn't sell it to me due to a recall that didn't have a permanent fix yet (sound familiar?). I didn't ask for any details so not sure if that was due to corporate policy or a some law.

Sounds similar to a situation I had once. The car I was trading had an active safety recall that I wasn't even aware of. The dealer said if they took it on trade, they'd either have to hold it till a fix was available for the recall or send it to the auction.

What’s the big deal, just get the recall done, it’s free. There are probably 3 recalls you need done, gas tank and two reprogramming ones. They will probably give you a car for the day.

If a Ford dealer told me that (not that I would ever step foot onto Ford lot) I could think of better places to stick the Liquid Nails :censored:.
@Eurodriver, are you really serious thinking of going to a 2024 4 Door F250 XLT w/ 4x4? That is going to be a bit hit to the pocket book :spending:. With that I guess you will moving onto the Ford forums. :monocle:

I’m pretty sure the permanent fix is done. I got a notice about the temporary one months ago and I received a new one on the app that I’m pretty sure is the permanent one. I could be wrong but that’s what I was led to believe

The recall has been out for at least six months if not longer. That's the wholesale trade in price.

Surely the fix is available at your dealer????

good lord people, the perm fix isnt out yet, its summer expected.

the temp fix is out and has been out for a while now.

I'm sure it takes a good amount of time to redesign everything, test, test, test, then secure a supplier and manufacture that many parts.

even with all your cutting, modding, and beating, you may want to clean it up a bit and go private party.

you also dont have to deal with the recall hold that way potentially.

I bet someone would give you more than that.

The temporary fix will satisfy the open recall, correct? That should do the trick, temporary or not.

Wouldn't he save on taxes if he trades it to the dealership vs sell to private party and pay income tax on that?

yes, but its only tax savings on the trade in amount, so tax for the low amount they offered for trade. Easy math to do and can compare when you get a private party offer

You have to run the numbers but generally you can save more money if you sell privately rather than trading the vehicle in even if you include the taxes. When I sold my 2013 RAV4 last May the break even point was about $2,000. If I sold privatley and got $2,000 or more over what they were going to give me for it as a trade in, then that was money in my pocket. I wound up getting $7,000 more selling it privately, so $5,000 in my pocket instead of the dealerships pocket. Why do you think some dealerships are hungry for your trade in, especially if they are maintained well and in good shape.

Depending on states yes you typically save the state taxes on the trade in value

I have sold vehicles and traded them in. Selling them yourselves can be a workload depending on what you selling and where. Fact is many people that will buy privately are hunting a good deal from sellers that want a good deal as well. You will have to kiss a lot of cheapskate frogs before you find Prince charming willing to pay what you want. You earn the money

Same is true of real estate. People will pay more for listed property than for sale by owner. They know your costs are less. Many will want all the savings to pass thru to them as the buyer

@Eurodriver there are many Tundra and TRD stickers that you can put on the Ford! Then the Youtube channel will still work for us Tunderers :)

But seriuosly, we are going to miss all the banter and watching you do those truck things that most of us can't even bring ourselves to do with our pavement princesses!

Man, looks like resale value for the Tundras have bottomed out. A 2-3 year old truck with a trade-in value in the teens?!?!?! I would absolutely try to sell it private party.

When I was at the dealership the other day asking about a hybrid limited, the salesman told me that I would probably be looking at an additional $15 to 20K to get a 2024 Limited Hybrid and that isn't even a TRD version. The hybrid option was ~3k when I bought mine but there were none available.

My Late 2022 has ~4,000 miles on it but that doesn't matter. He seemed to hint that the engine issue might be one of the reasons but wouldn't come out and confirm that.

They aren't moving any Tundras and with the new Taco, people are shifting focus to preorders of those.

What a surprise, a salesman found a pain point to lowball the trade in value.

Could be true that used tundras aren't moving yet, and supply is large, but oh how convenient to point to some issues and blame them for low trade in value. Typical negotiation tactic

Don't worry, he said he wants to get an F250, he didn't say he bought it already.

They haven't yet ran his credit ;)
