Steel for the win, if there is any way possible to win a total loss of a vehicle.

The fire on the Ford never made it to the front end where as the Tundra was fully engulfed.

Why anyone would try to extinguish their own vehicle is beyond me. Even if you are able to put it out before it really gets going, the amount of headaches you are going to have from chasing melted wiring is not worth it. If my truck every catches fire I'd open all the doors for extra airflow to make sure its a total loss and call my insurance agent.

Everything you say is true. Only reason I wouldn't is if I had stuff in there I wanted out and I didn't want to cause a forest fire or something. They'll charge your ass for that forest fire LOL

yup just take out the stuff i want and start fanning the fire. Not to mention you really don't want to be anywhere near a strut or a tire when it lets go or hit a magnesium steering column with water when its cooking.

We do live in the forest and if he hadn't extinguished it may or may not have gotten really serious. His fire was caused by fluid leaking from an overheated tranny, I think. And, he caught it right away. He's still driving that truck.
When I was a kid, I had a fire start because I used plumbers tape as an emergency ground from the battery to the engine block. I put it out immediately, it didn't do any damage except to my ego, and I drove the car for years.
I think there are times when you can put out a fire and times when ya just gotta sit back and enjoy the carbeque.

At some point, I totally agree. Now days, with the cost of trucks, the insurance companies will attempt to repair.

Now my Jeep, you damn right I will try to put the fire out. I'm usually in a place that it might just kill me as well. With the Waldo Canyon and Black Forest fires, I really got schooled on how fast a wildfire can burn. I also learned a lot on how to make a defenseable area to protect ones home.

Firefighters are bad ass....and a little crazy.
