FRAM oil filter is larger?

So today I did the first oil change myself on the new to me Tundra. It's got 93,500 miles on it, but I just bought it at 88,300 so this is my first time servicing this truck. Maintenance light was on also.

Anyhow, the oil filter I picked up at Walmart is the FRAM "Xtra Guard" 10295. Full synthetic media, supposed to be their top of the line filter. I checked and double checked that this part number is spec'd for the Toyota/Lexus 5.7L V8.

When I took out the existing oil filter (brand unknown) I noticed that it is a couple of millimeters shorter in height than the FRAM filter. Whereas the existing filter fit snuggly around the metal tube in the filter cap, the FRAM filter is ever so slightly loose. What's up with that?

I installed the FRAM filter anyhow since the truck couldn't be driven until I did. After finishing the job I verified no leaks and good oil pressure.

I won't buy a FRAM filter again I guess, but has anybody here noticed the same about FRAM oil filters on these engines?

I cannot confirm for the Tundra, plan to do my first as well next week, but with my FJ Cruiser the Wix & Fram filters were larger than the Toyota one. Never had any problems. Larger filter seems better in theory to me as long as it fits properly.

I always use the Toyota filter. They sell them at my Walmart.

I would be concerned about the loose fit of the center tube within the filter holes. Oil should not be able to pass through there, bypassing the filter material.

    Just say no to Fram.

Toyota or Bosch/Wix, Mobil 1 in a pinch.

That's what concerns me. It doesn't fit the same. It's probably 2 or 3 mm taller, so I assume it presses on the metal clip/bypass valve in the cap differently.

If you buy Mama Toyota filters in the 5 pack or better yet the case of 10 the price per each is less than Fram. I think my last case purchase of Toyota filters a year ago was something like $4.90 each.

I wouldn't use a FRAM filter if they were free. You would be better off cutting a roll of paper towels to length and using that.

It sucks thru the middle so any looseness just gets sucked tight against the tube, bfd....

There is no sucking involved with the filter.

Well, there isn’t normally, anyway. What you do with yours isn’t my business, and I won’t judge.

So between having the slowest drain flow I've ever seen, the ridiculous oil filter housing design, the filter I bought not fitting, and then the dipstick showing over filled even though I refilled by the book, I have to say that this oil change was the most hilarious one I've ever done on any gas or diesel truck I've ever had in the garage. Just pure ridiculousness.

As a side note I learned you have to wait for hours before checking the oil because it takes forever to get the oil to drain down to the pan on these engines for some unknown reason.

I did mine for the first time last week and I broke the freaking oil filter wrench I bought trying to get the stupid plastic filter housing off. Thank goodness I had an alloy one ready to go as I broke the plastic too.

    Silly design.

The first time I did mine, it was so friggin tight and I couldn't get the plug out either. I thought the plastic cap was going to shatter if I continued. I decided to wait until I bought the metal housing and had the insurance to proceed. Sure enough, the cap was so tight I destroyed it to get it off... RIDICULOUS design. But that's what the forum is for! Got all the info, bought the right stuff, and now changing the oil is a simple job. 30minutes tops, most of which is just the drain time. I dab the housing threads and plug threads with neversiez and it's so painless to do. To the point where I actually enjoy changing the oil. Go figure.

But I only ever use OEM TRD filters for the truck. No F'n way would I use Fram!
