Frame rust

    I have to ask. I've been reading lots of complaints from people who own Gen 3 Tundras who are complaining about frame rust damage. Most of these seems to be a couple of years old. Is that a concern? Has this been addressed in current Tundras?

    I think it all depends on what state you live in. If they salt the roads or you live near the beach you should be protecting the underside of your truck anyways. Fluid film is a good option. I live in California but I’m far away from the beach to not have to worry about rust. When I first bought it, I did hit the underside with fluid film. I don’t notice any rust yet!

    Thanks. I spend a lot of time in the Tahoe area in the winter and run my vehicles through a wash with under carriage sprays when I come back down. Never had a problem with my other vehicles but some of these stories seem extreme.

    My 16 is starting to show small areas of rust. And I’m in CO :(. I did drive it to Iowa for 3 days over the winter and it just so happened to be a slushy icy mess. That could be the culprit.

    No rust what so ever and I'm on Texas coast do lots of beach drives, but I have signs of rust on rear seat braces that are bolted to floor board

    I bought my 2014 in November of 2013 so it has been through 5 rough Pennsylvania winters. I sprayed the undercarriage with Fluid Film prior to each winter. I don't have any notable frame rust, just a few tiny areas of surface rust where the lift arms at the dealer touched the bottom of the frame and a few nooks and crannies here and there that I may have missed with the fluid film.

    Unfortunately the undercarriage of my 16 TRD Pro also has what I would consider a lot of rust. 90% of it is along the weld lines of the black frame bars. I also noticed it on the two tow points on the front. I lived in Boston for 5 years where I specifically went to a car wash that did not use recycled water for the undercarriage wash. Knowing how much salt is dumped on the roads i would not miss a week without washing my truck and the undercarriage.
    So because I dont trust anyone else to do this correctly, I bought the drill wire brush attachment pack, the Rustoleum Rust Reformer, and high heat paint. All flat black of course. Throw on some safety glasses, a face mask, and clothes you dont care about. You’ll be filthy, but just follow the instructions on the can, grind away the chipping paint and most of the rust, pass a soapy wet cloth, let dry, spray rust reformer, allow 24 hours to dry, then finish off with the high heat spray paint to further protect that rust reformer layer. This is your undercarriage so all kinds of road debris hit down there. Protect the rust reformer layer. Remember, no one will do this job better than you will. This takes patience.

    Also, if you prefer, POR-15 will be the better option as it doesnt require a protective paint layer. Also performs the best out of all rust reformers on the market. Watch youtube reviews on it. Only Con i can see is its a gray color (not flat black like your frame). After watching this youtube review of all the stuff on the market, i went with the Rustoleum as it was what i could get the fastest and less work to apply.

    Living in Ohio and having had a 3rd gen T4R frame crumble, I coat my 2.5 gen Tundra and 4th gen T4R with Woolwax every couple of years.

    Same here. Ohio road salt eats truck frames. WoolWax is a great product. It’s on the T4R I sold to my son and I recently bought a 2018 Tundra that came from Arizona and the frame looks spotless. WoolWax will be going it on this fall.
