I sold my 2013 Superduty 6.7L Powerstroke diesel... And bought a Tundra. Crazy? Read on...

I had a 9,000lb travel trailer and the Superduty sure did tow with ease--it'd pull it up the Chugach mountains to Seward going 70mph with power to spare. It was a Crew Cab so for the family of 6 it was roomy for our Alaskan adventures. It was a great introduction to diesel trucks, and I'm glad it's gone.

I had so many codes thrown due to the restrictive EPA emissions equipment--NOX sensors, EGT probes, the entire catalyst had to be replaced, the DEF tank had to be replaced, the DEF pump had to be replaced, and that was just in 33,000 miles. I didn't trust that this truck wouldn't strand me 400 miles from nowhere in Canada on our move back to the Lower 48 this summer.

My brother in law has a 2006 Tundra with 240,000 miles--never an issue. A co-worker has a 2002 Tundra with 260,000 miles--never an issue. I now have 1,100 miles on my 2018 SR5 and I'm very pleased. Not as much room as that F250 Crew Cab, not 8,120lbs curb weight, not 800lbs of torque... and I don't care. This Tundra handles like a dream in snow and ice--I've only used 4-Hi once.

I'm planning to keep this truck for a couple decades. I'm sure it'll make it with little effort.

Welcome aboard from Northern California and I'm happy to hear you've selected a Tundra.

The problems you referenced about your former Ford has kept me away from any of the newer (2007.5) DEF equipped trucks. It's almost impossible to believe how the emissions systems are engineered to work in ALL climates/conditions.

It's an option to delete the vehicles. For about $2k you can rip the emissions off the truck and have a powerful beast. Unless the tuner you now rely on to circumvent the truck's computer glitches and then it won't even turn over. And bend over for fines if you live in a state or county that has emissions testing as a requirement for licensure.

Welcome...from OREGON ....I bought back in 2001, a brand new 7.3 Litre Crew Cab Diesel - Ford of course.....Never had 1 problem with that truck....and drove like a Cadillac.....sold it after 11 years of ownership....due to Diesel going through the roof......Anyway , then they of course decided to leave the 7.3 .....Big Mistake .....LOVE MY TUNDRA.....YOU WILL TOO !!!

Yeah I've ridden in a few deleted trucks and they're impressive. I live in an enhanced area which is another way of saying you get an emissions test as part of your biannual registration. Not worth the hassle in my book.

Welcome from Florida! The SCR technology sure has put a strain on the reliability of diesel powered trucks. Plus the cost of diesel and DEF is way above gas.

Is 87 octane cheaper than diesel and DEF?

Let’s run this to ground shall we?

My area in Colorado, 87 octane is 2.57 per gallon for the best fuel prices. 15 mph is the average for the mighty Tundra. Some people complain about this, but personally I think it is fantastic. People forget what a mid 80-90s Chevy truck with a big block achieved for fuel economy. The reason I compared a big block to the 5.7L Tundra motor, it’s the only thing close in power/torque ratings

So to drive a Tundra 10k miles it will cost you ~1713.00

Diesel in my area 2.64 per gallon. DEF comes to .004 per gallon (25.00/6000 miles). So I guess we can just call that 2.644 shall we?

Now let’s compair my Towing miles. I rarely have a tank that some work isn’t being done with a trailer, snow driving in mountains, etc. My overall mileage is 13.9 mpg.
    31B149D4-37C2-4615-8C91-21C13D214CE8.jpg

So let’s use the same 10000 miles of mostly towing over 8k lbs.

    1902.00.

That 189.00 is not really a big cost.

But wait, that was mostly towing. Since I don’t have a solid empty rating since I have never driven 700 miles pure highway, but my anniversary this year was a trip up to the mountains, driving around Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National forest. I did the round trip 20.6 mpg. I don’t like using the one tank that is 26 mpg, because that is not the normal. Gotta keep this real right?

    E479D670-2A19-4899-8F19-BAF48618C779.jpg

So let’s see this economy now.

1284.00 for the 10000 miles. Oops. Well shit, that math doesn’t work out in your favor now does it?

Ok ok, let’s do this another way. Let’s just say the Tundra is towing the same 8000 lbs and getting 7-8 mpg shall we?

    10000/8=1250 gallons x 2.57=

3212.00. Holy shit. That can’t be right, can it?

Now before you drop the whole “well maintenance is way higher” card, I just called Larry H Miller Toyota service department. A synthetic oil change for a 2012 5.7L is 65.00 at the dealer. Now I know for a fact mine (2016 GMC 6.6L Duramax) cost 77.00 at the dealer. So I lost that battle. Oh, and if you have the dealer do a fuel filter every 22500 miles, that will be 130.00 as well. I do my own for 35.00. Maintenance is higher, but overall cost is not.

I’m not singling you out Jeremy, but your not the first or the last to make that statement. It’s more of an education.

Thing you have to factor in is the additional up charge for the diesel engine as well, according to the math i ran a year or so ago, it would take over 200,000 to pay for itself.

You took that to the next level. I really didn't sit down and put much thought into it. I just noticed the diesel prices coming in today and saw how the gap had widened more in my area and thought of DEF expenses, although non-commercial trucks don't really use that much.

Diesel in my area is $2.89 versus $2.39 for regular so it would change your graphs a little bit.

Either way, when you tow as much as you do you're going to see a closer comparison like you said.
