When did garage ready refrigerators become a thing? Our Samsung (old kitchen fridge) is in the garage and froze up on the fridge side the other day for the second time in a year.

Around the same time vinyl floors and manual windows became a paid for option on trucks.

I think Samsungs are notoriously bad refrigerators for longevity right? Other stuff seems fine like I have a Samsung tv. When Ive researched appliances in the past was steering clear of Samsung based on what I was reading.

Yes it was about 7 years old when it froze up the very first time when it was in the house. It's about 9 years old now. Samsung electronics are very good, but steer away from their appliances.

Any recommended brands or models? Various sites are mentioning a GE 21.9 cubic feet model.

So does anyone actually have one? Fl garages are hot so I'm trying to figure out my best option before this Samsung freezes up again.

I have a garage ready freezer from GE, 17.3 cu ft. It is excellent. Our Samsung fridge in the house literally just crapped out. The fridge is working but the freezer is 71 degrees. Took it apart this weekend and can’t figure out what the exact issue is. The thermistor doesn’t seem to be ohming correctly, but it is displaying the correct temperature, so I don’t know what is going on.

I’ve had nothing but problems with Samsung. It was also 1500 more than our GE. Anyway, I’m thinking to replace the Samsung with a basic GE.

I'm looking at the GE 21.9 cubic foot model that is a top freezer. I wasn't sure it the "garage ready" is legit compared to a standard refrigerator.

I’m in the armpit of America and it gets blazing hot in our garage, plus very dusty. I think “garage ready” is legit. FWIW, we lost power during Beryl last week and this freezer kept our food cold for hours before I started up the genset. Very happy with the simplicity and reliability of the GE fridges. We’ve had ours for a couple years now.

Planned obsolescence. Nothing designed / manufactured to last anymore. If you have a local appliance shop that is capable of swapping circuit boards (or other diagnostics), give them a call and they can usually fix things for under $4-500; After the second failure, I'm looking at marketplace for a used one in the $100-200 range.

My garage fridge I've had for 8 years and it's held up over some nasty freezes in our old house (minimally insulated detached garage); Had about a week of 20 below and the fridge couldn't keep the beers warm enough so they froze and busted. Kind of a wild scene. It has a bit of a drip currently inside the fridge, but it still is keeping stuff cold

Our GE went out after six years a few months ago. I got it up and going again, moved to the garage, and it shit the bed again. It’s getting picked up this Friday to be recycled.

We had an old beater from the late 80s early 90s out there that lasted decades haha.

Not sure I’d put a new one out there, too hot and cold, maybe a dual use excuse to get a Dometic fridge/freezer out there?

I've been playing this game a while. Have one big Kenmore upright commercial freezer that has a manufacturing date of 2003. It survived the garage in coastal Virginia for four years before doing another another twelve years in the garage in the high desert (110 for the highs). The last five years it has had a much easier life in the basement, but no issues with it any point. Got another smaller Kenmore in 2015 that did four years in the garage in the high desert and another five years in our current garage (though 90 degrees is the extreme for our highs, but also -30 for the low), also with no issues. Both have Kenmore 253 model numbers which translate to Gibson as the manufacturer (owned by Electrolux, which also does Frigidaire).

I've been checking out Estate auctions in my local area. There's one currently in my area and the high bid on a working GE fridge is $12.00. They have an upright GE freezer for $38.00. Used fridges make good beer fridges.

Our garage fridge kicked the bucket and I gave it away. When I put the feelers out for a new to me garage fridge, a guy who lives down the street, and a former Marine, gave me his old kitchen fridge. I went to pick it up and he loaded it up on his own small trailer then drove it to my house.

    Karma is legit.
